Our New 'Race Prepped' '60 Corvair Coupe Roller
Posted by: The Californian ()
Date: November 07, 2019 07:04AM

Now that we're (Dad and I) Corvair owners we would like to be treated with a little more respect!smiling smiley

I know.........You earn respect. Just kidding around.

Agreed to get it sight unseen so we HAVE NO PICTURES OF IT.So please don't ask.

It comes with a rusty '60 Corvair complete to make one car out of.

Coupe is a 'roller'.No engine.

Might show up with it at next Pancake Toss in Palm Springs with it dusted off and on a trailer. We work slow here.Slow but sure!

I like to call it the Pancake Toss because I am allowed about two pancakes a month because of health reasons. That and one Mickey D's $1.39 Value menu double cheeseburger.'Oh.What a feeling!'

Anyhow. We thought and bought! '60 Corvair it is!

'65-69 are for rich folk.Us poor people will just have to make do with Hot Rodding's cast off's or passed over.

Wagon Master

I know the process.

Not going to bother the guy we are getting it from to take pictures.

This is where it stands.

We agreed to take the two '60 Corvairs.

That's it!

How about if you just let it go?

This is what I have been told about the coupe.

It has been lightened.Might have said interior removed.

It has lexan windows.Don't know if it includes side windows.

That is about it.

Going to see about saving the 4 door.

Been told Extend soaks into rust and stops it.

Then bondo it like we did to Studebaker GT Hawk in high school.

Long as we do not represent it as a rust free car if we sell it I do not see a problem with it.

Love that cantilever roof 4 door's looks.Very early 60's!

'Any more details?'

What I said above is about all we know about it.

IF my buddy sends any pictures I will post them.

'I have a race prepped 60'

Ours is way better than that! And it is only a roller right now.

Thinking about it.Yours does not look race prepped at all!

Looks like an Earl Scheib paint job though.

' I added a wing to help it not flip over!'

Still obsessing on me saying I am wary of handling on '60-63.

Well.I STILL AM!

When it is running don't expected me to take it out and floor it around curves the first time.

Yes. I understand now they CAN be dealt with.

But you just stay wound up about it forever.Makes no never mind to me.

I have been driving Corvairs my entire life, I learned to drive in a Corvair at age 8, My father was a GM Corvair mechanic, We lived in the Country, I have Beat the crap out of EM Corvairs my entire life, I have ripped though the desert, went off jumps, slid them sideways and done berm shots at speed as a daily Routine for years, I have beat more Corvairs to death than most people have even driven them, I took a Late model around a motocross track and jumped the double jump and landed so hard the rear shocks broke the mounts and went through the rear deck lid, the only thing I never did was roll one going around a corner, I did roll a VW bug and a Ford Falcon, IMO the Corvair is a way better car than most cars of the era, You need to quit reading Ralph's bogus book! Here is a pic of me as a child, take a look at my face, pondering ways to destroy a Corvair in my near future!drinking smiley

'I have Beat the crap out of EM Corvairs my entire life'

No test drive in our little coupe at the Pancake Toss next year for you!smiling smiley

You can look and ask how we get it to go so fast all you want but no drivee!

I will ask for pictures but I can't be a nuisance.

Do want to see what he means by 'rusty' for the 4 door.

Just so you know we will set up a pair of carb's for alcohol and nitro.

We don't mess around down south here!

Dave, you make a bad mistake putting the wing on the rear of that car. See, the Corvair is so dangerously tail heavy that extra downforce makes driving even more treacherous. At high speeds the rear downforce makes the already light front end even lighter, so when going too fast (usually 35 mph or so) the front raises enough that air gets underneath and the car flips over backwards!

Putting the wing on the front helps a lot. With the extra downforce on the front you can put like 40 lbs of air in the tires and the car handles like an Indy racer. As a bonus, the front wing at speed- 30 or so- had harmonic vibrations that worked as a deer whistle to keep wildlife out of your way.

My cousin knew a guy that worked for GM way back and he said the factory tried the front wing, but had to abandon the idea because when going in reverse the wing worked backwards, creating lift and causing the car to flip over backwards. So, sort of a no win either way.

Now we have cocktail shakers to add to the wing.

Hi Joel

Could you please refrain from putting 'grafitti' in my posts?

Very easy for me do to what a lot of my successful friends do.

'Too busy to go on forums.'

Especially if when I see an alert and spend the time to log in and navigate to

post and see it is only childish nonsense.

Thanks

Dave Moto Head (whatever that means)

Goes ditto for you.

You show a picture of a coupe with nothing that looks modified except a totally wrong wing on the back and talk about racing?

I see you have 3 rampsides.Suppose those are good for towing race cars and taking tools with.Themselves they ain't racy at all.

Get a race car and then tell me about it!

Just read about the Corvair Genie mod to improve oil cooling.

Do you know what that is?

Heat is the limiter on getting power out of Corvair engines.

They can't get rid of the heat like a water cooled can.

So there!
