66 Coupe Suspension Rework Project

Donna and I got the front suspension off the coupe yesterday, All pieces needing refurb are off the car. So it is time to get this one apart and start cleaning it. Front suspension is fairly clean, except for the typical greasy areas.

Received my order of bolts from the supplier. I asked Rick to add the couple of bolts, a few nuts and all the washers I need to his order when he places it later this week. Clark's will get the major order in a couple days when I know I have covered all parts I will need.

Looks good Al. I see also some rear suspension components. I don't see any provisions for front brake drums (nice). I also liked seeing all the fasteners you posted recently. Is there a problem with all the original (50+ years old) nuts and bolts?

It is pretty nice suspension parts. This car was garaged for most of its life in Birmingham AL. It spent about a year in my yard on a tarp under a lean-to with a cover on it. That was only until I got the 1st stage of my Corvair Center built that the Vair Moved in.

I like new hardware on suspension. Anyone want this old hardware can always PM me about it. The hardware in pretty good shape, so it is being stored. I scrapped all damaged or extremely rusted hardware. Cam bolts on front are being reused, if no issues. I have NOS camber bolts for the rear.

Gathered up all the NOS suspension parts I have acquired over the past years. All are in a bin with the hardware received to date. All waiting to be put on the suspension pieces being reconditioned.

Rick got the 25 1/2-20 Grade 8 yellow zinc nuts and delivered them to Donna. They are in the hardware bin with the rest of the parts collected so far.

I have to tear down the front suspension and rear torque arms still. But the More Door needed love today, as it will be in a Veteran's Day Parade in Jesup, GA on Saturday.

Disassembled rear suspension torque arms and front suspension today. All that is left to do before sandblasting is to press out the bushings. I have pipes ready for the procedure, but have to slice a pipe to do upper a-arms and get clamps to hold them together.

Now I have a issue with hardware holding the upper A-frame to the cross member.

My upper a-frames has metal lock nuts (3/8-24) to hold it on. The other 4 front suspension had either metal lock nuts or a lock washer and regular nut.

I searched with Google but only came up with F-bogy A-frame hardware that vendors are selling as same as OEM. What they are selling is black oxide bolts and grade 8 silver zinc metal lock nuts. I can almost believe the Vair had the same type hardware installed at time of production. The bolts I pulled from my coupe are black oxide.

Can someone who has definitive knowledge tell me what is correct or could someone who has a non-molested OEM pure in this area LM Vair use a mirror and determine what GM used on this location for nuts.

Al - You probably know this, but I thought I would pass this along. Be sure to pair Grade 8 nuts with Grade 8 bolts, and grade5 bolts with Grade 5 nuts. Torque specs are different and the clamping force and retention is based on the torque. If you torque a Grade 8 fastener to Grade 5 torque values, it may back off, then fall off. If you torque a Grade 5 nut to Grade 8 specs, it may strip. Same with a Grade 8 nut on a Grade 5 bolt. Just be consistent. As far as the bolts used. I can't help, because a previous owner of the race car put tapered spacers in between the upper A-arm and the mount to get more caster and camber. He replaced the stock bolts with longer Grade 8 fine thread bolts.

Sure did know that little fact. Part of my Navy/Marine aerospace training back in 1972.

Here is a note I put in the bolt listing in another discussion.

All hardware is GRADE 8 and factory hardware that was removed.

Everything on the suspension is Grade 8 that I have found.

And another note later in the discussion.

Note: You should use Grade 8 washers with all Grade 8 bolts & nuts.


And the link. I may have to amend the list depending on what I learn on the A-frame nuts.

I decided to check out the Shop Manual procedure for removing the upper control arm. Though an easy procedure, there is nice info in there to help in knowing parts needed for installation.

The manual on Page 3.12, Removal of Control Am, Assembly, states

Remove two nuts retaining the upper control arm cross shaft to front crossmember. Note number of shims at each bolt, if there any are present.

Everywhere else where washers are used, the washers are called out. This means to me that the upper control arm nuts do not have lock washers. The nuts have to be metal lock type nuts, like I found on my 66 Coupe. Time to update the pates list.

I'm a bit late to this thread.

I built some steel brackets.

To hang a front suspension.

On a standard engine stand.

Clamps hold the pinch weld.

Thanks for the stand photo. I was thinking of mounting it on my engine stand by using strut rods mount points. But nixed that idea and decided to leave it on my following green rack.

Pressed out old fittings from lower A-frames. Made the split pipe to do upper A-frame. Installed on one and pressed out on side. Now I need to make a press bush to press out the out her side. I have pressed it as par as it will go with a flat plate and long pipe.

Completed removing pressed bushings from upper A-frames. Also remove bushings from rear torque arms.

Time to degrease and sandblasting done.
