Article says Penske is only the 4th owner of Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Having Penske own the Indycar series is something. I guess we'll see.

Seeing as how this happened in my "Backyard" I am very interested! hot smiley

I am a History Buff and have grown up with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 'just West' of where I lived for my first 15 years I have a 'little' documentation on the history and ownership of IMS.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was conceived an built by four men for the testing and improvement of the Automobile.

Carl G. Fisher, James A. Alison, Arthur C. Newby and Frank H. Wheeler built the track on 540 acres of 'swampy' farm land just west of the Indianapolis City limits and built the now famous race track. They formed the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation and James A. Alison (a name you might recognize) was the first President.

Carl Fisher went on to build up the Town of Speedway around the track.

The second owner was WW 1 Ace Eddie Rickenbacker. Eddie was a car builder and race car driver but his real love was always flying. After the end of World War 2, Eddie talked Terra Haute business man Anton Hulman jr. (a millionaire with his own grocery business) to buy the Speedway so he would have money to start Eastern Airlines.

The Speepway was in bad shape, not having been used from 1941 to 1945! "Tony" began upgrading the facility to the best possible racing venue for both racers and fans. This was carried on by the Hulman-George family after his death.

Many changes have been made to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since it opened in 1909! I was privileged to work there every May as a Broadcast Engineer for 45 of my 48 years in Broadcasting.

I think Roger Penske is the best possible person to buy IMS. I will be very interested to see what happens!
