Carter YH Sidedraft Caburetor Tips
Posted by: The Californian ()

First things first.

When you go to take it apart are there any things to look out for?

Any parts that will go flying across the room?

Seems like they are a little troublesome to work on.

What is the deal with them?

A carburetor is idle, cruise and power circuits plus accelerator pump.

What is the problem with these carb's?

Yes that book is golden. It shows changes through the years. Many times a carburetor has mis-matched parts that don't work together well.
I believe Seth Emerson in San Jose (sethracer) has them.

In a broad sense, part of the problem with them is running the fuel/air mixture through 18" of cold twists and turns.

In a narrow sense they are an early 50s carburetor used in the Nash and 6 cylinder Corvette. You're right that they are simple, maybe something a little more sophisticated would work better.

They were something that was on the shelf at the time that would limit boost.

What might be wrong with them is an easy question on a broad topic. They are not inherently bad just a little finicky sometimes.

You can buy it from [www.perfvair.com]

Or on Ebay [www.ebay.com]

Likely you will also find a couple of copies at the Fan Belt Toss on Saturday.

'Larry, Bob wants conversation..'

Bench racing.

Carter YH,small turbo and complete '61-63 engine 'should' be here inside of a month.

'Get Bob Helt's book'

It is a little pricey. We have to save our pennies for Made in USA NOS rebuild kit.

'running the fuel/air mixture through 18" of cold twists and turns'

Yes.One for a Corvair turb(self plumbed, not factory) BUT getting some more for other projects. No turbo involved.'Phony Webers'.

Well worth the price for the excellent knowledge!

Besides you may get a used copy at the Fan Belt Toss!

The springs on the accelerator pump may fly across the room (or other open space) if the retainer clip is removed without holding the springs at the same time. The other parts will just fall into inconvenient places like the fan shroud if disassembling over the engine fan with no towel covering the opening.

Thanks Crawford

'springs on the accelerator pump may fly across the room (or other open space) if the retainer clip is removed without holding the springs at the same time.'

That's the ticket!

That is kind of info we are looking for.

Knock on wood.Have little YH to work on in less than a month.

Probably just take it apart and leave it apart until we need it.

Get rebuild parts and throw them in box with it.

And there's a ball in there too, if you have the ball-type accelerator pump.

Don't buy a NOS kit for it. Most likely the gaskets a rubber diaphragm will be dried up. I've got a NOS kit somewhere if you are interested but it is useless.

Disagree, if you can find on of these kits but it and use it. Better than the junk out there now.

Joel if you have one of these kits I will buy it.

I can guarantee the NOS kit I have is junk. The accelerator pump is rotten and brittle and the gaskets are also hard and brittle. No way it would do anyone any good. I'll look for it Thursday. I'm not sure why I would have kept it but I think I did.

Joel its hotter in Texas than here, that may be why they are cooked, but my old NOS REAL GM kits have better pumps than some new and can handle ethanol better that new ones.
