65 Corsa wheel choice
Posted by: joewryan ()

Can I get opinions on wheel choices for my 65 Corsa? I want a wheel that offsets out more than my current 14" wheels ("smoothies"), but am reading a lot of conflicting info on offsets and sizes. I'm thinking 15" x 7" Chevy style Rally wheels. Anyone have experience with this size? What offset is recommended?

We need to know what your current wheels are to know what would move out from there.

I am running 15", '67 Corvette Rallye Wheels on my Vert.
I am told that they are wrong, because the backspace is .5" off.
BUT, there has not been any noticeable problems that I am aware of in the last 20 years of driving with these wheels.
I love the look of the Chevy Rallye Wheel on our Corvairs.
It looks factory, to non-vair folks, and yet allows for a shorter sidewall.
What they used to call "+2 sizing".

Just bought 15X7 IROC wheels with stock 4.5" back spacing and installed 205/60R15s all around. No rubbing

You might want to consider 16" rally wheels. As a bonus, 911 Carrera tires work perfectly.

Can anyone comment on the wheel size where ride quality goes out the window? Random reading in this forum I've seen 17's mentioned as riding so rough that every imperfection is transmitted into the cabin. Seems to be a lot of love for 16's. Any regrets with bigger wheels than 15 "?

Its hard to say if there is a clear demarcation where the ride turns to crap. As one might guess, it is more of a sliding scale and of course, it depends on the entire suspension.

I have set up mine with 16" rims and 55/50 (f/r) aspect ratio tires, Clarks HD springs, rubber bushings, and Koni shocks and the car is very firm. It will do OK on dirt roads, but if I don’t slow down for the rough stuff, the alignment will get knocked out of whack.

At the other end of the spectrum, you might want to check out some of the original Corvair marketing films like this one (especially right around minute 2:21):

I have 15x6 rally's with 4" BS running BFG 205/60/15's front and 15x7 4.25"BS 235/60/15's on the rear. No problem on the front...
The rear has a problem rubbing on the front edge of the wheel well when it bottoms out. I might have to go down to 225's or try to increase BS to 4.5 or 4.75(ideal)
Its hard to get rims that meet that spec!
Even with 16" rims the most I can get with like a Am Racing TORQ THRUST is a 0mm offset = 4.0 BS
Dont mean to hijack but ISO used BFG 225/60/15's...

CLW: Ride is totally subjective. I think my '64 with 225/45R17s rides better than it did with 185/80R13 Maxxis tires. You really need to ride in someone's car if you are concerned about it. If you are ever in the Dallas area I'll give you rides in various cars back to back. I've got a Malibu with no rubber in the suspension, a box stock Lakewood and various stages in between.

I have 14" "smoothies" on the Corsa now. I inherited them from the previous owner. I think they are 7" wide.I'll post a pic in a few...

Hi there.

Can you tell me where you got the 67 Vette Rallye wheels? Are they OEM?

Yes, O.E.M.
I bought them off a fellow on CL many years ago.
They came off his Vette when he put some Mags on it.
Personally, I think he downgraded!

You can also buy them from Summit racing (repops). I just bought a set for my '65 vert. Wheels + trim rings + center caps total $500.

Joel, I'm never near Dallas, but thanks for the offer.

I have a F41 suspension Chevelle with 60 aspect radials and she rides rough enough. I know the sport suspension contributes to a stiffer ride.

I also know that when we test drove SUV's the high end model had larger wheels and even my not so machine sensitive wife wanted to know why the more $ version rode worse.

But...15's are getting rare and that's whats on the Corvair now (and the Chevelle for that matter) and the date codes show her tires are 6 years old.

Thanks for the subjective ride responses.
