63 Spyder chirp/squeak in engine bay
Posted by: Ron in Indy ()

My 63 Spyder has recently developed an annoying chirping/squeaking when the engine is running, although it is not continuous. I posted a short video here if you want to take a listen (poor audio quality with my cheap phone, so it doesn't sound too bad in the video) I thought it might be belt noise, but I've readjusted the belt several times and it doesn't go away or get better/worse. The sound is absent when I ran the car briefly without the belt. The belt is about 5 years old, but appears to be in good condition. Thoughts?
Thanks,
Ron in Indy

Has to be the fan rubbing or bearing....but doesn't sound like a bearing.

Easiest to change / test is belt idler / adjuster... then Gen... Then fan

Thanks Matt.
So how do I isolate it? I tried spinning the fan and pulleys manually when I tok the belt off, and couldn't reproduce the sound. I squirted a little belt conditioner on the belt and slapped it back on-still chirps! Is it worth putting on a new belt?

I have seen blown head gaskets chirp/squeak, and be intermittant

Ron, That sounds like it may be a dry bearing "buzzing". Touch the end of each bearing shaft and generator end frames as you rev the engine to see if you can "feel" the noise.

Good suggestion Dan,
I tried this and it feels like there may be some intermittent binding/resistance on the idler pulley. I think I'll swap it out and see what happens.
Cheers,

These things help isolate noises. Place one end on ear, the other end on the suspect part.

As always, work safe, do not get tangled up in the fan belt!!!!!!

Length of rubber hose.

Screwdriver, long, handle at ear end.

Mechanics stethoscope.

Dowel.

I have heard head gaskets that squeak on early models. Usually do not go away. Will not go away with removing the belt, so not your problem.
