LM Wiper Motors - Types & Application
Posted by: Lane66m ()

Could someone explain the if the middle photo shows a single or 2 speed wiper motor and what years it was used in the Corvair fleet.

Top photo shows a single speed wiper motor.

Bottom photo shows a 2 speed wiper motor with washer pump. It is the same as on my 66 Vairs.

I can't figure out if the middle one is a 2 speed with motor with washer pump. If it is, why doesn't it have the 4th terminal to the right. What is that terminal used for on the motor in the bottom photo?

I did a forum search and Google search and did not find answers that provided any answer.

Watching with excitement. This is an area of Corvairs that I know nothing about. The only windshield wiper issues I've ever had (besides blades) are switch problems.

Al - PM sent - don't want to post preliminary (and possibly incorrect) info until I can verify.

This is a guess: The fourth terminal looks like a ground.
Can you check for continuity between that terminal and a bare spot on the shell?
Is the 4 terminal one the '68?

No grounds at wiper motor. All grounded through switch.

What I can figure, the yellow wire (4th terminal) is used to activate the washer pump for timing purposes. I guess it was the easiest way to get it in service with a jumper harness and a unique wiper motor, until production picked it up with the 3 terminal motor.

I colored the illustration attached to show the 66 model's wiring colors.

A better explanation of the this configuration would still be appreciated. And the application when each washer/wiper motor was introduced in GM production

All I know about application for sure is the 4 terminal motor and jumper harness (2 speed wiper with washer) was a Factory installed feature for 1966. It is what is on both my 66s, one built November and one built May.

The 1965 model had a single speed wiper with an option for a dealer install single speed washer. This is straight out of the GM specification document.

Al - your information agrees with what I PM'd. The 1967 wiring harness had a number of revisions - one revision eliminated the extra wiring harness for the two speed wiper/washer so the "D" terminal was no longer needed.

The two speed wiper/washer was standard on all 1966 model Covairs, but Chevy continued to use the extra wiring harness from the 1965 model option. So far I have NOT seen a 1966 with the three terminal wiper motor. Note both motors work the same and are available as rebuilt units.

So what other applications are used for the Corvair wiper motor?

I have not found one.

Here is what 66Vairman wrote to me not long after posting the original post. Everything I found confirms his info. If anyone else has anything else, it would be nice to know. For info, my November 65 More Door and my 66 Coupe both have 4 terminal motors.

"There are two types of "rebuilt" wiper motors sold referred to as "four terminal" and "three terminal" (like in your pictures). Both are two speed motors and operate the same. The 65 and 66 cars use the "four terminal" two speed/washer motor. Why the extra terminal - to accommodate the extra wiring harness added to two speed wiper/washer cars that was optional in 1965. The main harness ONLY had a wire for the single speed wiper standard on 65 models.

Both my 66 cars have the "four terminal" motor and wiring even though some GM doc's say 1966 was "three wire" motor (all 1966 models had the two speed motor/washer as standard). So maybe the three wire was phased in late. That said - ALL the 1967 models and later had a revised main wiring harness that ONLY needed three terminals on the motor."

The "motor" and "pump" seem to have been used on a number of Chevy cars of that era based on the re-builders list, BUT things like the linkage arm or orientation of the pump nozzles were probably different depending on the model. I recall the linkage arm is held on to the motor shaft by a nut and easy to change.
