Bellhousing Seal Spacer Question
Posted by: sawdog81 ()
Date: September 09, 2019 08:06PM

I pulled a prematurely leaking Viton seal and replaced it with Nitrile.

I am adding a Clarks spacer to position seal on new area as well.

Is this good practice or only to be used with late cranks?

Clarks Corvair sez...

Spacer C5311 needed when a 1964-69 crankshaft is used in a 1960-63 engine. Helps position seal into correct location on crankshaft gear. Also use to position seal on new area of any crankshaft gear.

I think Bob Coffin told me you can use a cyl base gasket to space a late model seal

I use the thicker bell housing gasket to move the seal a little.

I use the base gasket(s) method for seal re-positioning. I want all the clearance I can get between the back of the flywheel and bellhousing bolts.

T answer you question directly it should not be a problem to use the spacer. I use them almost universally when changing this seal (unless the crank surface looks perfect).

Thank you.

I've already installed the spacer, but have not stabbed the motor.

Clarks catalog is a little inconsistent:

page 27: " Also use in 1964–69 to position seal on “new” part of gear to avoid the wear groove"

page 7: "Also use to position seal on new area of any crankshaft gear"
