Manual or Automatic transmission? Yes drain to proper level if lube color looks good. Overfilling can overpower the diff. seals and make a mess out the diff. vent.

If you have a PG, check the level of trans fluid. If low/empty, time for seal replacement.

Also a clue is if the lube you drain out of the differential is RED!

If it's that full you should be able to remove the filler plug to drain the excess. If it's got a dipstick it probably doesn't have a drain plug.

I fully agree that ATF in the differential is bad.

Now that I'm thinking about it I don't know how you could overfill a differential except through the dipstick hole given A LOT of time.

There's an "easy" and a "hard" seal between ATF and gear oil. I've had good luck doing just the "easy" one the last two times. It's really not easy, just sort of a relative term.

dipstick or not, the fill plug on the side of the diff will let you drain it to where it should be.

I don't think my transmission has a dipstick or fill plug. The only time I've changed the fluid was when I pumped it out of the hole behind my backing switch.

Eric, 66 DID NOT have a transaxle dipstick but it certainly had a check/fill plug.

All Corvair differentials have the check/fill plug.

You never want oil over the mid-point of the gear axis. Once it is over that, it churns into whipped cream-like foam, which colapses between the gears or in the bearings, causing cavitation and pitting.

So no word back from Fred. I'm curious if it comes out red with ATF.
