O/T-Need Fire Fighting Cart Ideas
Posted by: Phil Dally ()

Way way off topic...any ideas appreciated.

Neighbors shop burned down two months ago.

Everybody was okay and it was fully insured.

I thought we were next...it was a huge fire.

Been thinking about a mobile fire fighting cart.

Supply will be our 500 gallon well water tank.

Tank is located in the center of the property.

Fire Dept stand pipe goes forward 500 feet.

Need a reel with 200 feet to get to the rear.

Roll out that 2" hose for supply from tank.

Swinging reel mounted 1 1/2" on side of cart.

Gas powered 2" water pump also mounted on cart.

Dedicated generator for well head if no power.

If I was that concerned I would install a sprinkler system in my garage. If your not there to fight the fire or sound asleep when it starts it wouldn't help much.

My main concern is fire from an outside source other than inside shop.

But the mobile cart would be able to fight fire inside the shop too.

My neighbor couldn't find a fire extinguisher...I have about ten.

Most these pumps put out 200-300 gal/min so you water tank will be empty in 2-3 minuets.
Do you need to go smaller just to keep you building wet?

Phil, get these 2 items and start building on what you want. You will have to adapt the dolly for use with the trailer. But your atv or lawn mower can move it around. Rough terrain tires on trailer. Trailer dolly rolls on the sand around my place. You can store your hose reels, shovels, axes extinguishers and a few other items you can think of.

Years ago a friend of mine started a GM only Junk Yard.
Before he got around to paving the entire yard with concrete, he needed to get his torches around the yard and found the standard wheels were useless.
Since he had plenty of temporary spare tires available, he converted all the carts in the junk yard to use the temporary spare tires.
They were not big and bulky like a regular tire, and they held up just fine while allowing easier transport on rough terrain.

My property is 100% flat as a pancake.

The tank is center bottom of picture.

Good thinking about the tank capacity.

How far away is the fire department? But then it doesn't really matter, why? Because if the fire is that big you will not get it out, maybe slow it a little but that is all. If you catch a fire in it's infancy fire extinguishers work very well. If you have flammable materials in the building, and who doesn't?, you need the equipment to handle the TYPE of fire. Water is NOT the cure all.

Before you actually purchase anything talk to a local fire fighter that has had some training and take his ideas. Not sure you want to talk to the fire chief! LOL

May want to peruse the vintage fire engine market and see what may be around. Don't know how practical that would be but it's one avenue to look down.
