() Date: September 03, 2019 07:12AM Well maybe someone can see why my clutch was slipping.... ![]() At least I got to try out my hydraulic lift table which made it much easier to drop the powerpack and raise the car up on the lift too. Now to see what caused the clutch disk to fail. Pressure plate took it hard but the flywheel may get a pass. Looks like I lucked out and already had a bolted one installed before. Later... () Date: September 03, 2019 08:13AM I have actually seen the clutch material cracked on disk's that were rebuilt and fracture when the rivets were slammed in. Just one more thing to check before installing a rebuilt clutch. Now would be a good time to check flywheel axial and radial runout. Also have the units balanced. () Date: September 03, 2019 08:25AM Dave, Thanks. Car ran and shifted beautifully for the last 5-6K miles I've owned it, just started slipping and got worse. Flywheel looks pristine and is a bolted one, will post that photo later. The pressure plate certainly took it in the shorts though... () Date: September 03, 2019 08:53AM Mike Please invest the time and money on the flywheel. Yes it may look good, but...…………. The fact that it is bolted suggests that it may be out of round. The fact that it has never been done...……. and needs it. When they are done, your car will shift smoothly and effortlessly and the clutch will wear evenly. Please consider this. As Dave said!!! () Date: September 03, 2019 10:07AM I have 2 new friction discs for a 8x6 clutch in my archives. That are left over from the time I worked for a clutch Factory in the sixties. () Date: September 03, 2019 06:23PM I exploded a clutch disk years ago during a really high rpm shift... something like 6500-6800, and it scared the living daylights out of me, as I didn't know what happened. After getting the engine out and inspecting the carnage, the source of the problem turned out to be oil that had gotten on the clutch disk, and the material that the disk was made from, which was a carbon based material... this stuff DOES NOT tolerate any oil on it at all. I had the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces reconditioned, and rebalanced, and went back to a O.E. clutch material, and fixed the source of the leak. I can see WHY your clutch was slipping, it is only 8" in diameter! ![]() You need a 9" for a 140. Do you also have the weighted pressure plate? Frank DuVal Fredericksburg, VA Re: Wonder Why My Clutch was Slipping..... Posted by:

() Date: September 04, 2019 04:51AM Couple of things, first the 8" disc actually gives you more clamping pressure as in lbs. per sq. in. The 8" will also shift faster because of the smaller dia. I offer a 9 1/8" carbon/Kevlar disc. I know there was a post about carbon and oil but my facings are bonded to a steel backing so they can take more RPM. Besides, clutches are not supposed to have oil on them anyway! On another note. Everyone stresses that the 180 and 140 engines need the weight lugs. This is absolutely not true. The ONLY reason to run the weight lug PP is because the plate is better material. It is easy to switch plates and re-balance. There are different pressure pressure plates but the lightest will hold a stock 180 engine. Ken Hand Handy Car Care 248 613 8586 Vairmech@aol.com Re: Wonder Why My Clutch was Slipping..... Posted by:

() Date: September 04, 2019 07:07AM Well the autopsy showed oil or gear oil had gotten to the clutch over time. Flywheel was toast, had gotten very hot probably from slipping. Until the first slip occurred no problems, smooth drive and shift. So now to get the parts list finished and ordered. I will check on the clutch disc size and weighted pressure plate and advise those that asked. Thanks, Mike Here is photo of clutch side of flywheel. 1966 Monza Convertible, 140HP-4 speed, Ermine White Black Mountain,NC Others in the menagerie... 72 Corvette Stingray, 58K miles, owned since 87 72 MGB, 112K miles, bought from original owner in 09 78 Chevy pickup, 124K miles, bought new in 78 93 Corvette, LT1/6spd, 210K miles, daily driver since 96 02, Chevy Z71, 4x4, 93K miles, my Dad's truck, inherited 2021 Attachments: ![]() Re: Wonder Why My Clutch was Slipping..... () Date: September 04, 2019 12:24PM Years ago, the clutch disc in my Rampside disintegrated during the 1-2 shift coming out of a toll booth. One moment I was accelerating and the next moment I had a box full of neutrals... in the far left lane! Somehow I managed to coast to the shoulder, and called for a tow. (I called for a tow by walking to a phone booth. Remember phone booths?) This was so long ago that Nixon was still president and the repair was performed by a Chevy dealer. () Date: September 05, 2019 03:58AM At our event last June, one of the entrants car died on the way. Our club member Mike Thomas volunteered to pull the power pack out and repair it. This is what he found with no evidence of any clutch material in the bell housing. It's like aliens abduct the clutch material without a trace. Check out the rivets, almost no scrape marks. () Date: September 05, 2019 06:52AM OK folks, last post for today got to get back to work. Sorry about the serial posts to answer everyone's questions. Here are my questions for the experts here: Suggested sources for flywheels, pressure plates, clutch disks? Anyone used the hot riveted flywheel from Clark's? Pro's/Con's versus bolted? Likely sources of oil leak that got inside to the clutch/pp/Flywheel? (Confirmed it with UV dye last night, 15 min drive before the teardown. Will check back tonight.
