hi all,
ive been offered a pair of nice 68 camaro bucket seats.
the front seats in my 66 4dr are shot and i cant afford to get them reupholstered this year.
how do i make the camaro seats work in the corvair ?
do the seat tracks swap over or is it more complicated than that ?
tx

Should just bolt in.... but seat tracks are only 2 bolts if they don't. Seats are same as our '67-9's

If price is right pick up the seats for sure and figure out the tracks later.

The 67+ seats have a different bolt pattern at the floor I'm pretty sure. Are the sliders to seat bottom bolt patterns the same?

You will have to make some plates to make it work. You either love the 67-69 seats, or hate them. I prefer them.

I know the seats are sold and it's kind of a moot point, but since there was all that conversation about how to get Camaro seats into a Corvair I thought I'd just mention that I have 67 seats in my 66, and the way I made them fit, I didn't have to make anything special. I found these wedges at Lowe's. They come in a lot of different sizes and I was able to get everything to fit by using them to offset the bolts.

Great idea for those of us who aren't the world's best welders.

Its a shame you aren't on the east coast. We have 3 sets of black 68 seats

For sake of reference, the Camaro and Corvair used the same Astro bucket seat frame and padding. Only difference was the upholstery. The seat tracks for the Corvair are special to our cars and differ only in relation to '65-6 vs. '67-9. Even then, what seems to be keeping many of them from being swapped is a bracket with 2 studs, with one each end, that's welded to the floor.

I installed '69 seats in a '66 once, and a friend put a pair of '67 seats in a '63 coupe. Both were easier to do than you'd imagine. Just use the Corvair tracks for the year of seat. As texas yenko dude said, some like them, some don't. Or as I say, it depends on whether your bucket fits that bucket.

Actually depending on which Camaro interior was ordered, the padding is different. The padding for the Camaros with standard interior is different than the padding for the deluxe interior. It’s not a better padding, it’s shaped differently.

Since I'm not into Camaros and only have just a little experience with installing them in Corvairs and vice versa), that's a minor difference with which I would not be familiar. (I say minor, because it wouldn't affect the installation in a car.) Thanks for the update, TYD. smiling smiley

There are differences to each of the 3 years (actually 4 if you consider the F body used them in 1970) of Astro seats:
67 narrow seat with metal back
68 narrow seat with plastic back
69 wide seat with plastic back and 2 styles of tall head rest
70 wide seat with plastic back and short head rest

The covers, frames and foam from 67 and 68's will interchange with the 69 and 70.
You can see this in the GM parts book by comparing the part numbers between 68 and 69 (which at first glance look identical).

The change to plastic back from the metal back happened around the 22,000 VIN Corvairs on 2 door cars only. The 4 door cars stayed with the steel back to the end, because of the lack of the built-in latch release as was on the 2 door cars's seats. The 4 door backs were held by a bolt run up from the bottom on one side. The change also changed the top hooks that held the top of the seat back in place.
