NECC Update!

Twenty drivers participated in the NECC high performance driving event at Pocono Raceway’s North Course on Saturday, September 14, 2019. We were hoping for a better turnout but the weather forecast was foreboding and probably scared a lot of would-be drivers away. But although it was misty, the anticipated storms did not arrive until well after we all packed up and went home. Those who stayed home missed a great day at the track.

As usual, we had a variety of makes and models of cars. The most exotic was Kim Rook’s Porsche 911 Turbo GT Street R, which if the specs are correct, packs north of 700 horsepower. His buddy David Hakim drove another hi-po Porsche, a GT3 model. Both of them ripped up the track for a good portion of the day.

Richard Dougherty and Dan Jones chased each other over many many laps during the practice sessions. Richard drove his 2017 Ford Mustang GT 350 and Dan drove his 2003 Corvette Z06. And we had a sprinkling of other serious machinery, too, including BMW sedans and more.

Sixteen drivers participated in the time trials session. David Burnham – a long-time friend of NECC – clocked the fastest time of day at 59.7 seconds in his highly-modified Maserati BiTurbo. David is no stranger to this track and he knows how to negotiate it with aplomb.

The Corvair contingent consisted of Brian Davis, John Egerton, Anthony Gravino, Dan Schmidt, Nick Schmidt and Terry Stafford. Tony’s Yenko Stinger tribute car was the prettiest. Brian’s transverse mid-engine Corvair was the most radical. Dan and Nick piloted old reliable Number 22, formerly owned by Al Hildebrandt. John and Terry ran their ’64 Corvair coupes which always attract attention at NECC meets. John Egerton fired-off a 1 minute 7 second lap time, making his the fastest Corvair driver of the day.

All of the Corvairs ran fine. Well almost. John’s harmonic balancer decided to self-destruct right as he was coming across the finish line for his final lap during the timed session. It happened at the end of the day so he didn’t lose any track time.

Everybody loves a sleeper and what could be a more innocuous-looking track car than a ’76 Chevette? How about one equipped with a 3800 Series II Buick V6, Corvette rear suspension, and a custom-fabricated front suspension with coil-overs? NECC’s Chief of Operations Ray Zabinski has been developing this little monster over the last couple of years. It ran great at Pocono with son Kevin in the driver’s seat. Best lap time: A very respectable 1 minute 5 seconds.

Speaking of lap times, you can find them all at NECC’s website at When you get there, click on “Lap Times” on the navigation menu.
