Murphy's Law

Unloading the other day and not one but both hooks decided to grab the cables. Hooks would fall off immediately if I wanted them on the cables.

I use a short leader chain with T-hooks placed at the two factory tie down slots in the chassis. That forms a Y-chain that reaches out in front of the car so I don't have to crawl underneath too far when I attached the winch cable. Rattle snakes and black widows are lurking under long abandoned cars around here so I don't like to reach into areas I can't see.

The last time I loaded a Corvair I was in a hurry and the hook of the winch cable spun down and perfectly caught the lip of my tilt bed trailer. I thought the winch slowed down due to the flat spots on the tires coming around again but it was the hook catching on the trailer. It busted the cable in about a half second. No one was in the danger area when it snapped so all that got hurt was the cable and my pride. I now have it rigged with a new cable but no hook, only a closed quick-link.

The t-hooks are what I'm using in the picture. My chains have t-hooks and the big J-hooks as well as the chain hooks that are the problem in this picture but they are nice to shorten the chains when they are too long. At full length they are too long to pull cars up to the winches but they are easier to work with.
The big J-hooks are nice to hook up cars that you don't want to crawl under. It would be nice to have different chains for different situations but I don't want to carry that many extra. Maybe a chain with nothing but snap hooks to connect to different hooks?

It had been more than 5 minutes so I had already forgotten about that post. I guess I should have looked for context...

True. If I had no hooks they wouldn't cause problems.
