I am struggling with an engine issue
Posted by: 2ragtops ()
Date: August 12, 2019 09:54AM

Working on a members car.

It has lots of small issues but it usually runs and fairly well.

We replaced both carbs as they were not working. All is good.

However, it will not restart hot, cold it fires right up.

Also the dwell has been jumping around. I tried two known good plates no change.
I just put a Clark rebuilt and no change. It runs from 32 to zero to over one hundred on my diagnostic machine and back to 32.

Any ideas.

Put on a Clark's rebuilt what?
Point plate? Whole distributor housing? If just plate I'd say the dist. shaft to housing bushing is gone. Causing point cam wooble

I'd get another Dwell meter and recheck....those readings don't seem possible..

And Check dwell while CRANKING as well as when running.

did you get those readings while it was running? Agreed, that doesn't seem likely. I assume you still have points/condenser?

One of the hot issues I read about on the forum is a heat sensitive coil.

Not possible to have over 60 degrees on a 6 cylinder. Do you have a good working meter set to the proper test (6 cylinder and set to dwell). I couldn't make my Rampside start when warmed up without a little squirt of gas. When running it would run and drive properly. I ended up putting in 2 viton cups for the accelerator pumps and that resolved the issue.

I will try and answer your questions.

I put on a rebuilt points plate. Dwell at idle and mid range is all over the dial.
At high speed it sets dead on and does not move.

Dwell is checked while running, I will check while cranking

I will find another dwell meter and see if that changes things.

I am still using points and condenser, both just replaced with new.

Carbs are brand new [less than 20 minutes running/idling in garage]from Clarks, I ASSUME they have viton cups. They do seem to be working, nice strong squirt.

A lot of times when the bushing is bad and I'm checking with a dwell meter, it will stay fairly constant at 32 when run at a constant speed but will vary like down to 25 when I rev it up. Of course you can feel a bad bushing when holding the distributor in your hands.

I put in new Clarks bushings regularly. They are often too tight for the shaft to go through when installed so I use valve lapping compound by hand until it fits.

I usually put the shaft in the drill press and clean with emery paper before this process. I might try smoothing it down a little more everywhere but where it rides in the bushing next time I do one.

I heard someone bought the double bushing equipment from Lon who may not do anything with it. That's a shame, Lon had some good deals on double bushed distributors. It's the old Dale equipment of which I speak.

Dale had a cool slide show of the double bushing process on his website when he was doing them. I don't have a lathe for doing it for one thing.

Don't assume Clark's carbs have the Viton cups. They don't sell them individually. Call and verify.

I changed the coil a few days ago, and it made things a lot better.

I don't think Clarks has viton cups. The black ones are usually fine for a few years unless you get some odd gas that attacks them.

Ken says check the coil which is good advice given the not starting when hot symptom. Feel it to see if it's getting hot. Check the spark to see if it changes when hot.

Thinking about what else might change, could the not restarting hot be a function of the choke being open?

If the motor has just run, shut off for say two minutes, shouldn't the chokes be open?

We were typing at the same time above.

If the engine is good and warm it takes more than a few minutes for the choke coils to close up.

It's good to hear that a different coil helped.

I am going to change the distributor today, I have a rebuilt base and will transfer all the stock parts over, clean the mechanical advance etc. and see if that helps the wobbling dwell.

OK Changed the distributor, and all is good electrically.
Dwell is steady at all speeds, timing at 16 no more backfire, starts easily.

Moving forward and I am smiling.
