What is a good size to replace 195/65R14
Posted by: rlp11 ()

Hi All

Like the subject line says I have been running 195/65R14 on my 64 Vair. Now I need new tires and the 196/65R14 are getting very hard to find. Is there any other 14" tire that will work. I want to keep the same diameter and I have lots of room to go wider. I am running 1964 Nova rims.

Thanks All

The 205/70X14 has the same rotations per mile as the old 7.00X13. A little bigger than the old 6.50X13.

My 66 speedo has been calibrated to factory spec. and reads exactly 70MPH at 70MPH with the 205/70X14.

Roger - Tire Rack has two different tires that might work for you. They still have the European-made Vredestein Sportrac 5 in a 195/65-14. It is 24" tall. Also available is a Riken Raptor in 215/60-HR14. It is 24.2 inches tall. Either tire is under $100 dollars each.

J.0. That tire calculator doesn't agree with Tire Rack's, but than again tire tolerances vary by 5% so it comes down to checking them on the car. With the lower front tire pressure for Corvairs the revs per mile tends to be greater than most of the charts. I found this issue long ago and now check the tires on the car.

825 - 835 is a good revs per mile for speedometer accuracy, but best checked by chaulking the tire on the car and measuring.

I would rather ease the 70 MPH RPMs than keep the speedometer calibrated but that's just me. "It's these late nights and freeway flying that always makes me sing".

With the 225/60/14 I am within 1 MPH on the speedo and GPS. About 1 mph less at 60 than with the 205/70/13. Also, I believe the 66 and up speedo has a different Revs per than the 65, with the exception of the 65 Corsa which is the same as the 66.
