Things I should look for when buying a corvair

I have a friend who’s thinking about buying a corvair. He doesn’t have a preference on which year to get so he’s willing to buy an EM and LM. What are some things that he should look for when looking at them?

In the FAQ's Sticky is a pre-buy check list...very informative and thorough.

1) Is it a Corvair or Corvair powered?

2) Does the price reflect the condition?

3) Do you have the money?

If all 3 are yes buy it. If you get too picky you'll never have enough Corvairs.

This is a loaded question!!!

He doesn't know what he wants, just that it has to be a Corvair?! That leaves things pretty wide open. My opinion is that he should at least do some more looking around and trying to figure out what he wants (truck, van car?).

I guess I can assume that if he is not picky to generation (EM or LM) you are implying that he wants a car and not a van etc?

All I can say is that try to buy something that is driveable and not a disassembled project. Just being able to drive the car, even if it is rusty and ugly will be key to having fun and building appreciation.

Depending on budget of course, try to buy the least rust as possible, but even if you live in the rust belt like me, buy something that drives, and is at least not critically rusted in hard to repair structural areas. A rusty driver is way better than a good solid chassis that is missing many parts and not quite a car yet!

Number one question; does he like a mechanical challenge?

Yep, you have to narrow down what you want to buy. It took me 6 months to decide on LM Monza ,4speed 110. Year did not matter, it needed to be a running drivable
car. With clear title and current registration. It was a mess but that suited me just fine. I love working on my Corvair.

Well, he made his decision. He got a 69 Beetle.

W O T as an acronym does not only stand for "wide open throttle".

Volkswagens are a gateway drug. Many Beetle owner graduate to Corvairs and remain hooked for life. Ask me how I know.
