OT cell phone reception
Posted by: jjohnsonjo ()

Is anyone out there "REALLY HAPPY" with there cell phone reception? What make, model, carrier, CDMA or GSM. I just got a new Samsung S8 to replace my old S4 which was beginning to have issues. One of the reasons for the S8 is that it is rated near the top for reception. Anyway, it S**ks. I only get one bar in my house where I got 2 or 3 with the S4. It won't work at all in the garage. I doubt its a bad phone although it could be. So hopefully I can exchange it for something else. Right now I am running on Straight Talk Verizon mobile CDMA.

My S7 Edge also has poor reception. I can see two towers from my window yet I only get none to one bar. I have to leave the phone on the dash to get reliable GPS in the car. My S5 was much better that way. Also Verizon CDMA

Nothing ever worked better than my flip phone, period. But Phil you are living on borrowed time. Verizon is about to kill the CDMA service you will need a phone the is VoLTE capable.

That may be...but Verizon still sells new ($150) flip phones so it will work for a while.

I was at a gold camp for a week without phone or internet service last month...it was great.

Remember back in the days of dinosaurs when we just waited to get home and use a landline.

Isn't "funny" how the phone carriers and makers make us upgrade? Same story in PC-land. When my Galaxy S5 gave up, I tried to temporarily use my wife's old iPhone 5. Despite being out of service for only two weeks, Verizon refused to put it back on their system. They said it was "unreliable". sad smiley

I have Verizon/CDMA and an iPhone X. Works great with two exceptions: 1) there are dead spots for data on the base I work, but voice always works. I assume various radar systems interfere with sognal strenght. 2) there are voice deadspots in my house...very small areas (3-4 ft diameter) that neither party can hear each other, but the call is not dropped.

I've never used 1 GB of Data in a month.... but everytime I call saying I'm thinking of leaving.... they give me more... up to 10 GB...

g6 is a "" $400 phone..... sure! locked into Verizon....worthless...

Maxx was a $600 phone.... said they'd give me $14 trade in

LOVE Verizon.

Live in Iowa, but have been all-over. The only place I didn't have great reception was along the coast in Maine last summer - up around Acadia.

My wife was using an iPhone 6S, I was using an iphone 5S. Had T-Mobile, switched
to AT&T. Coverage sucked with both phones and carriers. AT&T doesn't support
wifi calling on the 5S, so I had them send me a microcel. Got my wife a iphone
XS, and I took her 6S. Coverage still sucks but can do wifi calling. Switched
to Verizon but after the first day, had to switch back to AT&T because I couldn't
get any bars away from the house. I don't live out in the country either.

It is going to get worse when the carriers switch over to 5G as 5G requires more
towers and works more like wifi. Initially, we are talking 300 to 600 feet
between towers to get reception. I would wait about 3 to 5 years before
investing in a 5G phone.

It depends a lot on where you are. My daughter has straight talk, and I was happy using it on my phone when in Virginia, but here in Florida it was very poor on the coast.
So this year I got Spectrum, and it is working well. (iPhone 7)

I had great luck with Verizon for many years, but the last few were not good in S. Calif.

I needed a spare cheap pocket flip phone (I hate dragging around the smart phone) and went with Consumer Cellular. So far great.

Keep in mind that some of the new phones will use 5G whenever there is reception and there are many complaints about the short battery life when in the 5G mode (the phone processing and transmitting power consumption increases).

Verizon CDMA is a relatively unused standard in the world. GSM carriers tend to share networks and eventually this will result in better service and usually a GSM phone can be unlocked and moved to different carriers for competitive pricing. Most (if not all) CDMA phones are locked to the carrier you get them from.

It all depends on your location. I've tried them all in my area and none work very well. AT&T's Microcell is good if you have a really good internet connection. T-Mobile used to have something like it and I would guess others do also. When I lived in Keller all of them were terrible at my house so when I moved to Northlake I tested AT&T at the house. Perfect 5 bars inside but a couple of years later it dropped to 1-2 inside. I guess they aimed the antennas somewhere else.
One thing that stinks about AT&T is when you are on a call it drops LTE so your internet connection is bad when you are on a phone call.
I have a Note 9.
