Posted by: Nelson ()
Date: July 08, 2019 01:44PM

After a while driving my 63 vert yesterday my temp light would come on when I stopped at a red light but as soon as I would drive off the light would go off and so it continued throughout my drive.. oil level is fine Any ideas what is causing this issue

Bad oil pressure or temp switch. Pull the wires one at a time, see which one. If the temp wire came loose and touches a ground, that would do it.

Likely a bad oil pressure switch or low oil pressure or low engine idle speed. I would just replace the oil pressure switch (they are cheap and common) and see what happens(these switches take a special socket, but, in a pinch a good channel lock or vice grip plier will work). How low is the idle set? A low idle can make low oil pressure that will activate the light via the oil pressure switch...this should not happened with a good switch at a proper curb idle speed. Temp switch can turn the light on but it is not likely to turn the light back off as soon as the RPM increases.

Also what oil are you running?

If by chance the oil pressure is low at idle I bet if you put a new oil pump in it you will be good to go. I just did this with my throw together engine, the oil pressure is very good.

Check the oil temp with a laser. I found my light coming on at 105ºC, so I changed out the switch. (I usually measure at the filter, with the engine off, as the air flow will affect your reading)

Thanks for all the input gentlemen. I will try on Saturday when I’ve got some more time and I will post my findings. BTW I’m running 10W 30 for oil

How does air flow change a laser temperature reader's measurement?

Also what 10W-30 oil?
There are only a few that are good for a flat tappet engine. Go to Richard 1 post and read his link on oil.

The Laser Thermometer is reading surface temperature.
There is a LOT of turbulent air movement around the oil filter area.
Therefore the surface of the oil-filter is being cooled down by the air flow.

That is true. I didn't figure there was enough to make a difference there.

I wouldn't have thought that it would make that big of a difference either, considering that it is continuously being heat on the inside with fresh HOT oil.
BUT, if Richard says it makes a difference, then I will believe him.

I found that my pin came out of rear heat door and was jammed and kept the door closed on the right side. Would this have anything to do with my temp light coming when stopped at a red light ?

IF it were heat/temp related the light
would NOT go off instantly leaving a
light, it would stay on.

This is oil pressure related. One question
no one has asked is if car in question is
PG. If so (and I bet it is) it is not at
all uncommon to see oil pressure drop
while sitting at traffic light. Slow
RPM and under load will allow oil press
to drop and either flicker light or full
on. Of course the instant rpm is picked
up the oil press is up and light is off.

TRY THIS: next traffic light when warning
light is on just move selector to N. If
light goes off you have found the culprit.

Fix is the same as Ken states above:
replace or at least check oil pump
clearances. OR just put heavier weight
oil in but that really isn't the answer.

best wishes, Steve

Your oil pump is fine!

What you need is a new Oil Pressure switch!!!

Get one from Clark's, they have the right one for Corvair.

From my experience..... Switch is fine unless leaking...

Oil pump / Engine bearings worn...

And he's running 10w30...

If no lifters are Clattering... forget it.... or go to 20w30 or 20w40 [ what I run ].

How old is your oil, the additives break down with heat and age. Also, don't over look a bad fuel pump that could be thinning your oil with gas.
