61 Control Rod bushing install orientation?
Date: July 07, 2019 07:37AM

I'm sure it's in the assembly manual which I do not have, but it doesn't seem to be in the repair manual. I bought Clark's bushings, do I have this right?

No. If those are standard bushings the washers are backwards. If they are the high performance style bushings the washers are correct. In either case the rubber bushings are install backwards. The big end with the raised locating ring of rubber goes against the suspension crossmember.

They are standard 61. The washers can't be backwards because they have the lock ring for the nut. As per the manual they're correct. The bushings are what I'm questioning.

First photo is 1960-'61 bushing.

Second photo is 1962-'69 original style bushing.

Last photo is 1962-'69 performance style replacement bushing.

By the way, bushings in your photo should turned around, big end facing suspension unit.

Bushings installed something like this: --*| < | > |*--

(<> are bushings, vertical lines are washers and suspension, asterisk represents nuts, and horizontal lines represent strut rod).

P/N C3915 on page 155 middle of page. Says requires no large washers. This is odd unless they say this because large washers are included... either that or these have changed as they used to use large washers with the concave out

Performance Moog K6094 bushings can be bought through Summit, Amazon, Evilbay, and many more automotive shops. Using their search, type-in: Moog K6094 Prices very from $25 to $65 and more. They do fit '62-'69 Corvairs without modification. Perform much better than original style bushings.

Are the '61 rods a different diameter? Just wondering why the later ones don't fit.

I bought my performance bushings from the Underground, and they came without instructions. They are installed now without washers because I think I read somewhere on here that they aren't supposed to be used, but now I'm questioning that. If anyone knows for sure which way to install them I'd love to hear before I drive it.

Google Moog K6094 and see if they look like yours from Underground. If so, you are fine, as the bushings have washers built in.

Or just look at Vairchet's bottom picture, that is the Moog K6094.

Performance bushings will fit '62-'69 as displayed in above photo without modification as mentioned earlier. NO REASON TO REMOVE WASHERS. Let's see.... '60'-'61 rods have a slot machined into them for fold-over lock washers and to eliminate large oval washer from rotating. Another issue, Suspension has oversized oval holes punched through to mount bushings. Bushings are designed to fit inside hole without rotating. I suppose you could fit later style bushings, but you'll have problem with rod trying to force itself to the outside edge of hole every time you brake hard. If my memory serves me well, '60-'61 rod is 11/16" diameter but uses a different tread (coarse.... much like an Acme tread). Of course, nuts cannot interchange.
