It arrived as a "roller" in L.A., CA. Lasted over five seconds and things were swaying back and forth, including ME! No damage at my place.

That is exactly what they are are supposed to do. YEALD, rather than fail.

After each major earthquake, California building codes get upgraded from lessons learned. No political crap. Just very solid engineering work.

I hope you realize that you're talking to someone who has a mechanical engineering degree, so I am very much aware of designed-in yield points, designs, and methods. The pictures I posted were actually engineering screw-ups, and I posted them partly as levity. But I remember what happened to the old Bay Bridge, when the top floor fell into the lower floor. In all seriousness, the possibility of bridge failure is scary. My niece lives in LA, so I am always concerned every time they have a major quake.

I did not feel it, but that may have something to due with my proximity to the San Andres Fault....about one mile as the crow flies away from me.

Earthquakes can be very scary and I certainly have been thru a number of them. Sylmar in '71, Whittier in '87,
Northridge in '94, etc. I left California 13-16 years ago for many reasons. Earthquakes were not one of them.
