On Facebook there seems to be a move afoot to help get Smitty's "64" wagon repaired. I think Allen Bristow is perhaps leading this effort.

All the best to Smitty.

What? I haven't even received an email from the local club about this yet.

Glad to hear he is resting fine. Although knowing him, he will not rest easy until the car is better.winking smiley

By himself in the car?

OMG! I hope Smitty pulls thru from this one. I hope Helen was not with him when this happened. I think another body is the answer. Then everything can be transferred. I was just wondering last week if I would be seeing them in St. Charles.

Respectfully, our cars are just metal at the end of the day. Fun toys and all that.

The important thing here is the people in the car. I wish a speedy recovery to all involved.

Long ago I saw the life long damage of an auto accident on a wonderful teenager.

It will be hard to find another 1964 wagon body to transfer parts from the wrecked wagon.

The car had been built better than new, Smitty is one of the best mechanics I've ever met. He used than car to tow a camper from Virginia the California and back. If it only bend the body on that one side then it should be work fixing. It's impossible to tell from just that photo. Like did it bend the whole car, bend suspension parts? I sure would like to see it rolling again.

OUCH!!!

Smitty is the focus now, not the car. Wonder if a semi sideswiped him?

Wow, just wow.

Thoughts to Smitty.

My best wishes to Smitty for a speedy and full recovery. Cars can be replaced. Hopefully he has no injured body parts that heal slowly, and be up and around quickly.
It is repairable, however, the cowl damage is going to be the daunting part. Finding someone that knows how to pull the cowl, and cut out and replace the B pillar, rocker, front body panel, front fender and rear quarter is going to be extremely difficult. In my younger days, I worked at a shop that cut and welded 2 Corvair wrecks together to create one, and We wouldn't consider tackling damage like this. Too extensive to repair. I would look for another solid body, and salvage as much of the original car as possible to transfer to the new car. If he has a high stated value on this car, there is a possibility that he can pull off the switch without much out of pocket costs. Haggerty now offers a policy where you can keep the car if it is totaled at no expense to you. The cost of this extra insurance is very reasonable, especially if you know that you have improvements to the car that make it highly sought after as salvage.

OMG! I'm just thankful he survived and I hope he has a speedy recovery. Will keep him in my prayers.

And so sorry for the damage to his beloved wagon. From the looks of it, it may not be fatal, but it's going to need a lot of body work, or a rebody. Just hope it was sufficiently insured, as that will be a big determining factor in what happens. And as good a mechanic as he is, none of us are getting any younger. It'll be harder for him to duplicate his effort than it was originally.

Smitty, hope you are monitoring this, as I wish you all the best! grinning smiley May the Lord be with you.

This is heartbreaking. I’m glad he is ok. Never met him personally but enjoyed his posts for years on virtualvairs. The !64 wagon is legendary in my mind and has inspired me on three wagons I have owned. I hope it can be resurrected. If not I have a good wagon body here in NM but that’s an awful long distance. I have some good wagon doors as well if there is a need.

The Stig, knowing Smitty as I do, I doubt that, if worse comes to worse, distance would be a problem for him. After all, his far-flung travels with the wagon are legendary. I once got a roller body from out in the desert past Bakersfield CA once. Had it shipped to my door here in Ohio for less than it would have cost me to rebuild my car, from all the rust damage.

May he AND the wagon come back stronger than ever! If he chooses to rebody it, maybe we ought to name it the "Audrey III". grinning smiley
