NEED URGENT HELP: No starter
Posted by: Johnnya101 ()

This is my only car so it's kind of vital I get this going again.

Had charger on battery all night (other story). Full 12.7 v battery charge. Turn key. Kicks for half a second and nothing. Turn key again. Nothing. Tach rolls backward. Jump it, starts right up. Turn off, try again, kicks for half a second and nothing.

What the heck is going on? I tried unplugging the purple Eire and no change. Bad starter? I really need help on this because I need a car.

Perhaps the battery has a weak/bad cell. It reads good voltage, but under the load of starting, it's toast.

Clean the battery terminals.
If jumping works the car is fine. The only possibilities are battery or terminals.

Battery terminals are like a mirror and have been cleaned a ton. Spectres diagnosis seems very likely to me. I’ll bring it to get tested later today. Hope that’s all it is... this car has been in the shop more than out.

Yup. Just about any of the FLAPS now-a-days will test your battery and put it 'Under Load' for free...

Also check ground connections and connection on starter
I also had a wire with corrosion in it that would only start with a boost.

If the battery checks out and all cables and connections are clean and secure... the next thing I would check is the ignition switch.
After 50+ years, the contacts to the starter burn away the back plate making starting hit and miss.

I second Stitch. Have the battery LOAD tested. I just went through the exact same thing with my rampy, and battery was less than a year old.

Had it load tested with two different tested. Passed flying colors.

So in all:

No crank
No dash lights
Tach moves backwards

Any other ideas? Ignition switch bad, no power?

Have you wiggled / checked all the harness connectors?

Big one in engine compartment?

2 big ones up at the DASH?

Also when it won't CRANK.... disconnect the Big Purple and small yellow connector... jump 12 vdc + to the purple.... that goes directly to the solenoid.

This is a long shot.

Years ago I knew someone who said the car started fine when jumped, but would not start with the battery - hmmmm.

I observed that the person was hooking the jumper ground cable to the engine block. A fine safety practice. I made a check of the battery ground cable. Good ground to the body, but bad to the engine block - which conducts most of the amperage during starting. Fixed the battery ground to the engine block. Problem solved.

BTW - I've had FLAPS load tests pass and the battery WAS ACTUALLY BAD. Find a loaner battery and if it works - then replace your battery.

Negative cable is a good thought. I don't trust the FLAPS testers I've seen lately. Too small to actually load the battery.

Isn't there something like I turn the key and have someone check the voltage?

Yup. When it does a no crank, hold the key in the start position and back probe the purple wire at the connector going down to the starter to see if you have voltage.
What year is this car?
Automatic or standard transmission?

Had battery tested with a large load. All okay. I cleaned up the negative battery terminal wire, stripped it, etc so hopefully it will make a difference. Will update.

Problem solved.

Unplugged and replugged the big plug by the engine multiple times. There was one black terminal. The wire that goes from the battery to the front. I'm guessing that was the culprit, but I also took off the negative cable terminal and trimmed and stripped the wire, and reclamped it. The old negative wire was very corroded and dirty. Cleaned it all up. Connected the battery and polarized the Gen, lights lit up and it started! Shut it off and cranked it a few times. All good. Hope that's all it was.
