Cig Lighter Scare!! (And lighter WTcool smiley

Had my 61 in the shop for some gas tank stuff... got it back today and saw a missing lighter push in! Asked what happened, he said it got stuck and almost burned the car up! :O

Just a reminder to check them!

That being said, I would like to cover up the hole with a fill in plate I suppose, OR perhaps does anyone have an original lighter push in knob? Might try making a plastic contact so it wont get hot anymore but have the original knob.

Just find an original lighter plug in and put it in the lighter after disconnecting the wire from behind the lighter, or replace the unit with one that works. Clark's has many options.

Didnt even think of disconnecting the wire, lol. Ill check Clarks now.

Edit: Clarks is out of stock. Anyone got a 61 lighter knob? Can be dirt and not work.

I had that happen with my Greenbrier about 35 years ago. The lighter did not pop out and was far too hot to touch. I never needed the lighter but use the port for GPS and other items.
Ever since them, I just unscrewed the heating coil out of the lighter. It looks like a functioning stock one but cannot connect and get hot.

They early design cig. lighters did NOT auto pop out.
That was a safety feature that came later.

A friend of mine without knowing accidentally bumped mine with his knee while on a drive. Kept smelling the burnt electrical smell, finally figured out it had melted the wire from the fuse box to the cig plug. Not cool

In High School, 1999ish, I had the 66 'corsa' across town, actually looking at another Corvair. I had the bag phone plugged into the lighter, and the lighter wire popped off the back of the outlet, and shorted on the dash, and basically burned the insulation off of every. single. wire. in the car - including the battery cables.

Luckily, Dad recreated an entire harness for the car, and got it back on the road.
