Differential dipstick boss
Posted by: joelsplace ()

All Corvairs should have a dipstick for the differential. Too bad GM decided to drop it after '65.
Question: What differential cases have the boss for the dipstick? I recently added a dipstick to a '66 automatic and it had the boss but the automatic differential didn't change like the '66 manual did. Do any of the '66 up manual differentials have the boss?
When did the automatics lose the boss or did they?

Addition (and its removal) timing is probably approximate, seeing as the foundry probably had a number of molds for any one diff case. Knowing how sand castings are made would probably help in understanding what you are asking.

That said, the boss was probably added to the EM case some time before the '64's came out, as that was when it became standard. So every '64 case should have the boss. Likewise it was standard on the '65's, so all of those should have it. And though GM dropped it for '66, the boss continued to be cast into the cases for later models, at some point in around '68 the boss started to disappear. Its removal was really unnecessary, IMHO.

Did the flat spot for the tube hole in the forward engine tin go through '69?

Yes, though the hole was eliminated. Odd thing is that some of the '67 a/c cars have a hole there, but have a clear/white-ish plug in the hole. Note this shot of my '67 convertible's engine bay.

They must have come up with some NOS ones for the assembly line.

My '67 More Door was built in May 67 and had that hole and plug. Unfortunately, the car was crunched and sold off a few years ago. I suspect the engine still lives on as it was a good runner.

Everett,

So sorry to hear of the passing of your '67 4 door. It was scarce as it was, so to loose one is that much more of a loss for the Corvair community (not to mention yourself). sad smiley Hope you and your passengers made it out safely.

Looks like a lot of things were carried over. Example... I had a 65 Monza with Powerglide, that the differential pinion shaft had the Early speedometer drive teeth!

Pinion shaft either pg or stick needed the
speedo drive in 1965 because FC still had
diff driven speedometer.
