Today was an exciting day.

Exciting day today. I picked up the Pole Barn plans and material list this morning.

I can save $100 per post if the engineer allows me to use 6x6 vs 6x8 post.

That is a savings of $2,500 before taxes!

Other than that, I have NOT had the time to go over the materials list.

Busy day today.

I install new blades on the riding mower, serviced the deck and installed the deck back under the mower.
I cut over 5 acres of grass, some of it 3 feet tall, with only a 48" deck.

If the pole barn was not the priority right now, I would like to buy a 6 foot pull behind cutting deck.
Maybe some day soon.

I put some of these in the water where the hole is dug for where the pole barn is going.

Hopefully all the Mosquitos will be gone in that area when things dry out and it's time to start building.

There are 2 types of mosquitos.
Those that lay their eggs in still water, and those that lay their eggs in the moisture droplets down in wet grass.
We have BOTH!
Make sure that you kill all of the wet grass ones also.
Keep it cur SHORT so it will dry out!
I spent 3.5 days this week mowing the fields around the Marina.
Some of it over 3 feet tall also, but the > Bad Boy Zero Turn Mower < that I was using has a 64" mower deck.
I can't tell you how many acres I mowed(google maps says it was over 600,000 sq. ft.) during 3.5 days of mowing, BUT I can tell you about ALL of the Mosquito bites I have!
Those dirty buggers bit right through my long-sleeves and gloves!

Mel, So true.

We have an area that allows rain water to drain from the upper field and from the north and east side of the barn to another field.
When I cut that grass so it could dry out it was bad.

Also the 3 foot grass near where I'm building the pole barn was bad too.
It looks like I have to drag the old nasty riding mower out to cut more of the taller grass.
I don't care so much if that one gets beat up. Grin

I put a few drops of vegetable oil into standing water that I can't drain. That will coat the mosquito eggs, and they can't hatch. It is also environmentally safe. Now, the biggest problem is ticks, and I haven't found anything that will eliminate them other than a herd of chickens, which isn't an option around here. Between the foxes, wolves, and fisher cats, they don't stand a chance at night.

You need a llama to protect the chickens or a good dog.
