Why gas tank fits tighter in LM convertible

Fitting the new gas tank in my LM convertible was a tighter fit compared to my LM sedan. There is an extra panel welded on to the crossmember below the floor pans. The "U" panel makes that area of the body about 1/2" closer to the tank.

This is another "re-inforcement" I've found on the convertible that is not on a sedan. The other one I found was an extra support along the top cowl opening below the windshield.

Add in the rear fender braces, frame rail corner re-reinforcements, re-enforced rockers, and the "cocktail shakers". No wonder the convertibles are heavier.

That's why you need a turbo in a vert, but that adds even a few more pounds. I remember using a good portion of my vocabulary putting the tank in.

There is also more steel in the door hinge posts.

The extra layer in the cross piece behind the gas tank makes it more difficult to drill a new hole for gas hose going to electric fuel pump. Normally I use a bulkhead grommet but I had to install a bushing, I don't like running rubber hose through a sharp opening.

Any truth to the rumor that the LM convertible body was designed first, then the coupe?

Crazy idea... anyone ever install a coupe roof onto a convertible body? Just thinking out loud with my fingers on the keyboard. It would be an even stiffer body. Im sure there might be some advantage somewhere. Remove the cocktail shakers of course.
just thinking all of these extra supports are to return some of the strength taken away when the top was removed, so... add the roof back and even more stiffness!

When you decide to try it, please use a '65-'66 body okay?
I really think it would be easier to add the convertible braces to a coupe, than a top to a Vert.
The coupe body is plenty solid already compared to our gorgeous but a.k.a. Flexi-flyers.

Yes GM even used flexible skins on some parts so they could see any distortion. I read this in several places, don't remember when now.
