GM Corvette Prototypes

When I made the typo error in the stabilizer bar thread.

It made me think of the 1954 Corvette Corvair prototype.

One interweb later I had no idea there so many protoypes.

That car is in more than one of my Corvair books.
I remember seeing on the web, that someone was reproducing fiberglass bodies of that Concept Car too!

Always loved the wire spoke mags on the Chaparral and this Corvette Scirocco, although they're called "lace" wheels here. Were they ever available commercially?

Look for some Pontiac Firebird "Diamond Spoke" wheels or equivalent.

BBS also made similar design wheels that are light and strong.

The Pontiac diamond spoke wheel came on the Fiero GT and Formula, and various Firebird models. The Fiero wheel shown in 1966-Corsa-GT-180's above post is the '88 Fiero GT front wheel, and had no wheel lip inset, which was the case for its rear wheels and all the other models of Fiero. It's also the one-year-only optional gold wheel available only on the GT for '88. (I know, as I had one and also two other Fieros from previous years, all to my special order.)

The Firebird wheel is of course a different wheel, made larger and with a more centered rear drive offset. The Fiero wheel had a front drive offset. If you are looking for a wheel that will fit a Corvair, look for the Firebird wheels.

BTW, I also wrote the book "Fiero Spotter's Guide", now in its third edition and available through the following email address: oldemilfordpress@msn.com

That's my definition of a classic design, TomW. The LM Corvair is a shining example of a car that ages well. I can't believe the last Corvairs made are now officially 50 years old, and the design is even older. Yet it still looks good today. eye popping smiley WOW!

The wheels on that red Corvette in link look like appliance. They are different than the BBS or others! Heres a pic of the "Appliance wire mag" at top

When we sold my dads 58 Vette, the guy that rep’d the buyer built a clone of the Vette/Vair. I have a bunch of pictures somewhere, but I have to say it was a pretty damn impressive job he did on it. As I recall, he’ll build you one for $250K, you provide the donor ‘53-55 Donor Vette!

It is cool, because of the Corvair name connection, but when it comes to vintage Vette Concepts, I personally like the Corvette Nomad.

The car in the Link is the one I saw, spent an hour or so in the guys garage talking to him. You have to see it up close to appreciate it, stunning in every way.
