Removing wiper arms
Posted by: Pickle ()

Anyone have a tip for removing the wiper arms. I can see the little spring tab, but can't seem to get the arm to lift without endangering the body paint around the shaft opening.

Is there a special tool for that, known only to the guys in the auto supply?

I want to take mine off and paint the chrome flat black. There's a dazzling reflection at the right angle.

Thanks,

John

Put cardboard around the wiper arm post to protect paint, lift arm up. Pry arm up with screwdriver gently.

There is a special tool available but even with it car must be taken to not damage the paint or cowl. Support under pry tool (I use a rag and a paint stick under a small pry tool) and pry up opposite the arm while wiggling from arm side works.

One blade of small channel-lock plyers will lift the wiper arm nicely. As Al said, protect the paint with cardboard or other material.

Clean the splines and re-install with a slight film of anti-seize on the splines. They'll come off a lot easier next time.smileys with beer

If you do not have the paint can opening tool shown in Dave's video, buy the Lisle tool here, same design, but better tang to grab the cast part.

Or just Google Lisle 65750

I've used another brand of this tool for years. Only issue is it does push on the cowl to apply force to the cast part of the arm for removal.

I also own this tool, but I do not think I have a Snap-On brand. Works good, similar in action to the Lisle 65750, but no wiggly tang.

Thanks folks,

I've now tried some of these suggestions with no luck, so next will hit the local auto store for the special tool. I appreciate the response.

You are lifting the arm all the way up, aren't you? There is a locking tab that engages the wiper post when the arm is not fully up.

I use a little pry bar and work up on the little spring steel clip thingy, I think I'm saying the same thing as folks above.
