I would put that on the top deck with a couple of bungee cords.

Today we got the 1966 standard ratio steering gearbox rebuilt, lubricated and adjusted. We also disassembled, cleaned lubricated and reassembled the steering column mast lower bearing. The upper bearing we repack in situ. Also cleaned and painted the coupler and clamp we will be using to attach to the collapsible shaft. The upper steering shaft has been cleaned and rust removed from the lower spring location.

We will clean the 63 steering box tomorrow for its rebuild this weekend.

We will also setup another set of driveshafts for spares. One is ready with new universals that we installed today. Rust removal of the 2nd will occur soon. Just make do tasks until parts arrive.

I got the 63 gearbox all cleaned up yesterday. I have all the parts I need to rebuild it and to reinstall the column and the gearbox. It will be rebuilt soon. Temps are in the mid 90's so this is a good one for the a/c garage.

AL - If you are using the Flaming River upper bushing (which Clarks sells), How will you be retaining the bushing on the end of the upper shaft.

Seth:

Are you saying Clark's would sell us a 65-66 adapter shaft that will not properly mate to the 66 steering column? I hope that is not the case. I shall look at that today and address it with Clark's if it is an issue.

No, I am not saying that. The bushing used in the adapter kit can be retained in a couple of different ways. I know because I designed it with Flaming river. You can press out the pin at the end of the Corvair shaft. The hole in the Corvair main shaft is slightly larger than 3/8". It is almost exactly 10mm. The best way to install the upper bushing is to drill out the starter hole to 10mm, then install the bushing onto the shaft, slide the drill through and drill out the other side. Then re-install the original pin. The easy way is to bolt it with a 3/8" bolt, but it won't be as tight as with the pin.

Seth:

I wasn't able to check out the installation of the shaft yet. Busy day on a multitude of other Vair tasks, also lawn mower and back pack blower issues.

So this project has set back at least for a few days until I get the front hubs, rear axles & brakes back on the More Door. I also have to replace the rear axles and brakes on the Coupe as a companion task since the More Door is getting the new Advance Auto brakes off the Coupe. Still waiting on the Clark's shipment which has the needed brake installation parts I need to replace.

Installation was completed per instruction on supplied sheet. I used the original pin. Tight fit but used lock tight also on all pin and set screws.

Still looking for a 60-63 Pitman shaft in good condition.

Has anyone got one, they are will to part with at a reasonable cost? None on doing a Google search. Clark's doesn't list one. California Corvairs does not list one. but I left a message with Jeff just in case. I will be calling Jeff at the Corvair Ranch later today to see if he has one.

Separate topic to be posted this afternoon on this item after I talk with the both Jeffs.

Jeff at Corvair Ranch found a 60-63 Pitman shaft in great condition. I received it Thursday. As soon as I get my garage new power wire run to my garage, we can get back to the Corvairs.

Garage power back on last Monday. Rest of week was cleaning up the items related to the repair.

I did rebuild the short shaft gearbox with the rebuild kit and replacement worm gear shaft, ball nut, and Pittman shaft. Adjusted it to specs and it is a snug gearbox. Not the sloppy gearbox it was before It was tore down.
