Bottom line.... In socal...60's.... no one cared... even when Plymouth / Edelbrock offered the 4bbl

In San Diego....1963-4.... '61 Ranchero [ falcon ] with a 3/8's x 3/8's" Ford Flathead [ 304 ci ] with 4 Stromberg 97's and a 4 speed.... was the first to show up for street races..

The HyperPak Plymouth and Dodge out classed all the other cars in the very early 60's.

Imagine a HyperPak on one of the aluminum block slant 6's of the time.

The 3 speed torqueflite was also a couple of steps ahead of the Powerglide and the Ford-O-Matic 2 speed transmissions.

Not to mention the durability of the slant 6 engine. Head and shoulders above it's competition.

But the Corvair Evolved in a way the Dart and Valiant never did.

As we know, the Falcon evolved into the Mustang.

And the rest is history.

A High School buddy used mom and dad's 64 Dart. Super car at the time. 225 slant 6.

Heh, note that they avoided doing a REAL Corvair comparison.
Apples to Oranges since they compared a 2 Door to a 4 Door!
They knew they held a LOSER!

Let's not forget the Hyper-Pac Valiants that took the first 6 places in 1960 in a foreign and compact car race at Daytona. Aluminum blocks, factory rebuilt as stock cars. Things were so lop sided that the series didn't last long. Check a few paragraphs down in this link for the story. It was also the first race to be televised. Corvairs didn't do well but of course they didn't have the factory behind them.

My first car in 11th grade was a 1953 Studebaker Land Cruiser
with a 232 V8 engine. Had only 43K when I bought it
Paid $175 for it in 1965 or so??
I ran it out of oil in less than 10 months, Stupid me. But the car connsumed oil like crazy.
