Posted by: bobvair ()

Sealed 30 lb jug. How do I sell this to someone who needs it?

Thanks in advance.

Easiest to sell locally. To ship, you can't just mail or ship, you need a haz-mat shipping cert or ship through someone who does. BTDT.

Technically, it can only be transferred to someone that has the proper EPA license to dispense it. There is one loophole in the regulation that allows it to be transferred to another person, if, and only if, they are buying it from you, for resale to another person. i.e. They are acting as a middle man. You also have to get a signed statement from them, stating that they intend to resell the refrigerant in its present form to someone else. All of this is just to CYA! You can sell it anywhere you want, but keep in mind, that it is how you handle the transaction that counts, and what the next person does with it, isn't any of your concern, once you have the proper paperwork in your hands. Lacking that, it can come back to bite you in the a$$, if they get caught selling it. It is highly unlikely that any of this will ever happen, and I only offer this as a precaution.

I've seen plenty of it shipped with UPS and FedEx bought on eBay. Not saying it was a legal way to do it.

I would sell locally in person. While the epa rules apply to everyone the odds that you’d get caught up in a person to person sting operation are pretty slim. Shipping it is probably more hassle than it’s worth.

Craigslist in my area has ads for people looking to buy r12.

Superb advice, well taken. I do so appreciate your wise council.

I would appreciate your opinion on value and perhaps a good asking price.

Thanks in advance.

Last one I bought was $300. I've seen people asking as high as $1200.

The demand for r12 is not nearly what it once was. Retrofits work pretty well with r134. The last time I bought it it was under $3 a pound in 30# containers although the price fluctuates. Of course there are substitutes available most if which are flammable. Propane and “canned duster” can work.

If you could get $10 a pound or $300 out of the jug I would say you are doing well. People can ask $40 a pound but I’d be surprised if they are getting it.

How to ship it. Proving you're selling it to a legal person seems to be the pain part of it.

Bring it to a swap meet, and at $10 a pound, = $300, I will bet that it will be gone in less than an hour. People usually ask crazy prices for R12, thinking that they have struck the lottery. $10 a pound is like winning the lottery. I don't need it, but if I did, I would buy it in a heart beat. A Corvair uses 5 pounds of refrigerant.

IF IF you go to a swap meet always ask more to start, people like it when they make a good deal.

It's not every time that someone at a swap meet says I'll take it without making an offer first! Tack on $50-$100 take $50 less and bingo everyone is happy.

Keep in mind that you can always say no to an offer and never be offended at any offer. Just counter with $50 less and if they insist on lowball then go to a higher price than your original asking price. That really gets their attention, if they ask why just explain to them they are wasting your time and time is money so the price goes up.

I've played that game many a time!

Or find a local AC shop that can make money off it.

"a local AC shop can make money off it"

The newest car I work on that uses R12 is 1992. VERY VERY few cars that old are with people that want to spend money on anything for this 27 year old car. And very very few people have equipment for R12 and especially for a 30 pound cylinder. Single cans might be easier to sell than a 30 or 50 pound cylinder.
Also people are suspicious of the larger cylinders as many bootlegging thieving dogs (I know you Bob and I know you are none of the 3) have been known to fill a cylinder with crap and then claim it is dichlorodiflouromethane. You asked for opinions Bob. So there you go.

I know a local A/C shop. They told me they have no use for R12. They have 2 30lb jugs they said I could have. I'm picking them up next week.

Don't have them in my hands yet and 60lbs won't last forever.
I'll probably feel bad and pay the guy for them. Don't want anyone to think I'm cheating them. Not worth it.
