harmonic balancer install question
Posted by: toms73novass ()

When installing my harmonic balancer I was drawing it in with the bolt, I felt it firm up and stopped to back off and torque when I realized that the balancer had seated against the metal part of the seal on the rear housing.

This obviously was not right. I pulled it out some for clearance.

It is about .25 from being flush with where the large washer sits. Is this how it is suppose to be? I do not remember this ever happening on other engines......

It's been a while but doesn't the balancer bottom against the distributor gear, oil slinger and fuel pump cam and need those thicknesses to position correctly?

Crank, cam, spacer, gear, slinger. Forgot the spacer.

Joel is probably right the slinger is only sheet metal maybe .030 that combined with the spacer would be about that .25 you mentioned. good luck you'll have to remove the rear housing to install.

I have taken apart engines that did not have the slinger installed. An early engine looked never gone into, so I thought maybe early engines did not have a slinger. Of course they did not have a balancer either.

It was the slinger, I found it and installed. All is good now, fully seated and I checked through the dist hole the slinger is not loose it is fully pressed against.

The .25 I mentioned before was the distance from the recess in the harmonic balancer and the nose of the crank. With it properly installed there is still a step, I looked at on old HB and I can see the same amount where there was grime left. I feel confident that all is well now. Thanks.
