Yup, With your troubleshooting you have figured out it is an internal trans problem.

I agree with vairmech. If it was a 4spd you could pull the side cover with the trans still in the car and sometimes pry the linkage back on track. Unfortunately the only access to the 3spd is on top so it will have to come out. However I would try putting a drift punch in the pin hole on the trans shift shaft and try to wiggle it around right left in out you might get lucky.

Tried that, I’m not a lucky guy 99% of the time so I’ll just pull the engine out this weekend. At least I got one nice night out with it. sad smiley back to work!

As long as you have the drive train out, although a lot of work, and different parts, if you could locate a 64/65 4spd. They are great transmissions fully sync. and with your stock 3spd linkage it works as a quick shift. the only drawback is you have to change or modify the crossmember as the 4spd is longer. If you can get the parts and want to put in the extra effort it is worth it.

x2! A 4-speed really makes it a lot more fun to drive. That 1st on the 3 speed is terrible.

If this is an early car that was built as a 3 speed there is more to it than just dropping in a 4 speed. The body mount also needs to be modified. It really needs to be cut and then welded closed, it shouldn't be left open.

As I said Ken you have to change or modify the crossmember which I assume your calling the body mount. I've done it both ways. The results are worth it.

Some photos I took during the work I did. Wonder if there’s anything visible

And please remember the car drove/shifted pretty good before this

Drove the car 3 hours back home when I bought it with no problems

Hard to tell from the pics since the shift forks are deep inside. However beautiful work on the clean up and paint.

Where are you located any clubs nearby? I might have a line on a good rebuilt 4spd however shipping would be expensive.

I'm not familiar with the LA area anymore I lived in Anaheim for a short time in the seventies but I'm sure others will chime in here as I'm sure there are strong clubs in that area. I know years ago Corsa West was very active in that area. OK all you west coasters chime in here.

AK PM sent on clubs info.

Matt AK is closer to CORSA West. Locals say Vintage Corsa (orange county) has dwindled. CORSA West and SCC are doing well, great folks.

Just curious, does your car have a heater? The block off plate on the top engine shroud, appears to have a heater delete plate mounted to it.

It does have the heater controls in the cabin but they look like they are far from working. I don’t like the idea of heaters or A/C in classic cars. Have them
Working in my 71’ mercedes 280se but have never touched haha

That's just crazy talk right there. At this time of year in Ohio, you'll use both in the same day and be glad to have them.

Just pulled the engine out! Opened the top cap for the trans and here are some photos

Could not find anything obvious or out of the ordinary like broken teeth or metal shavings. I ended up just kind of lightly jiggling and fiddling with all the gizmos in there, and was able to free up the shift rod. Goes in and out smoothly. I just can not justify putting it back in the car as is. Do I send out to get rebuilt? Are there any kind of tests I can do to ensure everything is working properly again? I really just wanna drive this thing sad smiley
