grinding through gears after power pack refresh NOW STUCK in 2nd!!
Posted by: AKcorvair ()

Hey all!

Finally finished up refreshing the power pack on my 1964 3 speed 95hp and got the it back in the car!
I am very happy with how it came out, nice and clean. after a nice test drive I've come across a problem that was not there Before I pulled the power pack out.

a few notes. I put in a new clutch disk, pilot bushing, throw out bearing, and all gaskets/seals/fluids (flywheel and pressure plate inspected good coming out so I put them back in as is. plus I had no problems with clutch before)

Now, the car will badly grind going into all gears, but not all the time. sometimes its smooth and sometimes its grinds. weather its upward or downward shift (including reverse) also feels like the shifter binds up sometimes and I can't shift without a good jiggling around

what could be causing this? the aftermarket throw out bearing? the new clutch disk? did I need to adjust anything with the new disk?

I know forsure I did NOT put the clutch disk in backwards.

any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You will always have to adjust the clutch
linkage because new disc is thicker than
what you removed.

Read the shop manual instructions for the
sequence of adjustments please. Failure
to follow steps 'may' end up with a poorly
adjusted clutch.

^^^THAT^^^
And did you thoroughly compare the TO bearing to make sure they were dimensionally the same? If it’s too short there could be problems...

Make sure there is gl4,not gl5 in the trans/diff.

After making this post I went for another short drive and now what happened was the shifter is stuck in 2nd gear! I can not move it into any other gear. its completely stuck.

I was able to slowly drive the car back home in 2nd. I will try and find some time to get under there and see if I can find anything.

Check the T.O bearing, early and late have different sizes.

I was iffy about the throw out bearing from Clark’s. I emailed them before input it in and they told me the new aftermarket throw out bearings look different and may have a very slight difference in height but will work. New one was about a credit card TALLER(maybe thinner)

Clutch pedal feels great

I just pulled the shift linkage off and the shifter moves freely not which means the transmission is stuck in 2nd. What could be the reason for this. I’m very sad it looks like I’ll be pulling the engine back out sad smiley

As far as oil I used redline mt90 GL-4 performance lube.

Can anyone confirm this lubericant ok. I made sure it didn’t say gl5 anywhere on the bottle

Sounds like the clutch disk is in backwards.

Ditto!

Will it shift without the engine running?

I’m 99.99% it’s in correctly as there was a huge FLYWHEEL SIDE marked on it. The car drove great for a day then started grinding if I didn’t slowly and perfectly shift every time but would still still go into the gears with some wiggling.

Now after driving today I came to a full stop At a stop sign and it got completely stuck in 2nd and I can’t take it out. The car will still go but I can’t move the lever out of 2nd

Engine on or off, it’s stuck

Just to check everything, did you fill the axle AND trans. with fresh lube?

when I had it all out I drained out every bit of the nasty stuff that was in there
then once the power pack was in, I pumped in redline MT90 GL4 lube from the differential fill plug. then I opened up the transmission fill plug to fill it up but fluid started dripping out instantly, so I figured they are both full. also the differential dipstick is showing FULL

I wish I could update the thread title to transmission is STUCK since that is now the problem shortly after posting.

1964!

How about checking if the shifter ball came out of the socket up front? The shifter will wiggle a little more than usual and generally be at an odd position.

If the shifter is firm and just won't move then you have your answer where the trans needs to come out and apart to see what is going on.

Another thing I have seen is the pilot bushing not get put in the crank all the way, the input shaft will bind and act like a clutch disc in backwards.

Speaking of disc in backwards, I put one in backwards once, said I would never do that again. Well guess what? I put a second one in backwards! I knew better and KNOW better!

If you can't shift with the car sitting still engine off then you have issues not related to the clutch disc or throw out bearing.

One more question, if you push the clutch in does the car stop without issues, no dragging and the engine still idle normal?

Yes, If I push the clutch pedal the car starts and idles perfectly. I can even get going in 2nd to pick up some speed. Then I can push the clutch pedal in and come to a full stop and engine will idle perfect. Just can’t let go of clutch pedal when stopped since I’m stuck in 2nd

Pull the cotter pin and shift shaft pin at the coupler.
Does the shifter and shift tube free up and move normally?
No? It's a shifter/shift tube problem.
Yes? It's a internal trans issue.
Rap the shift shaft rearward with a deadblow hammer.
Things return to normal?
Something is bound up in the trans. But what? Or why?
Doubtful an internal problem can be remedied without dropping the drivetrain.

The problem is internal I disconnected the linkage at the transmission tube/rod and this freed up the shifter. But the transmission rod is stuck can’t move it in any direction
