have you thoroughly checked for vacuum leaks? even a very slight leak can make a huge difference. check that the carb studs are tight, and go over every vacuum hose. the short ones at the carb bases that attach to the balance tube are a common problem. if you haven't done so already, i would recommend replacing all the vacuum hoses before going any further. i did that on mine and it resolved all my starting and idle problems.

Ill be sure to check them all. Guarantee they are all original (The fuel line was, or at least close to original!). Ill have to put in an order with my upcoming Clarks order for new hoses, and hopefully those plus the new vacuum modulator will put it in a better place. Late April is my planned large maintenance time.

I really wouldn't replace the modulator unless you know it's bad. If you didn't replace the hoses mentioned on the balance tube that is almost positively a problem.

Nope, havent replaced any hoses yet except for the fuel hose. I will put in a big order tomorrow of stuff. Ill double check the accelerator pumps too, just in case.

There is a chance the PO replaced the hoses while replacing the carbs, but who knows. Will check tomorrow.

Glad you've got it low... I would richen the idle jets first.. and look at the Squirts... TWO STRONG Streams..each carb...

If not we'll tell you how to TEST and FIX that..

Hi folks,

Quick update... Re did the mixture and it seems happy around a little more than two turns open. Still hesitation... And I think I found the issue. When moving the throttle, the driver's carb has a strong spray of fuel, but passenger side has nothing. Rebuilt carbs. Where do I go from here? If clogged, is it possible to unclog? How hard are they to swap out?

Each carb should have TWO strong streams

Did you clean these holes...

Back to work for me... will tell you more tonight..

I didn't rebuild the carbs, they were bought probably from Clark's. Only one stremcomes.outof the driver's. So something's definitely up with them...

That 'cup' is what squirts the fuel. They make em out of Viton now too...smileys with beer

Should I just order new ones? How difficult are they to replace, does the entire carb have to come apart?

Well, good news at least. Removed and cleaned up the manual choke mechanism. Lots of gunk. Got it working great and smooth, now there's a full choke and fully open! Also replaced the spark plugs wires with new red silicone ones from Clark's. Wow. What a difference. The old ones were 20-30 years old, very cracked and had bits of the boots missing. Idles smoothly now. Still will give it a quick tune up.

Luckily I have the one jet working. It is fine if you accelerate slow and smooth.

I bet they will! With only one its still nice.

Do you recommend ordering the entire pump itself, or just the cup? Or could they just be clogged? How long does a job like this take? Next week will be rainy, so that would probably be my best bet for swapping them out. Currently 3 pumps do not work or are clogged.

Should those base gaskets be ordered too?

If one is working, get two! doesn't hurt to have an xtra. Carb has to come apart, but not hard to do. Make sure that the holes are free flowing as Matt said. You can peel the plastic off of a bread tie and use that wire to clean em...smiling smiley

Order base gaskets. They're cheap. Just in case you're sucking air too!

Just ordered a set of two new accelerator pumps, two new sets of insulator and gaskets, and a set of two carb balancer vacuum hoses from Clarks. This should put a final rest to my issues!

First... no need to take tops off of carbs... Long needle nose pliers and some tape or epoxy to help hold it... if it falls and ends up in the engine.. won't hurt... too small and will burn up or go out the exhaust.

IF three of the 4 holes are not squirting... but ONE is... 3 others are most likely just blocked!

If that doesn't help the other carb...

Find a Way to pour gas down the Vent!! [ duckbill ] Too low a fuel level will not allow the pump well to refill..

And before dismantling carb.... remove the linkage on the ACCEL pump arm... now move it by hand the full stroke and see if it works...

Thanks for the tips. What exactly does your first part with the pliers do? Hold what in? Sorry, maybe I'm just misunderstanding what you mean.

I can disconnect the linkage and try that later .

Get Viton accelerator cups from Johnn Sweet or California Corvairs. They will last longer in ethanol fuel.
