Fuel gauge resistance values?
Date: March 14, 2019 03:48PM

Any idea what they should be from empty to full in a 1961 sedan? Just ran out of gas because my gauge works when it feels like. Sender is new. Testing at the gauge. Have manual, doesn't give values in the chassis electrical section. Thanks guys.

Matt would say 'search' because it is in
the FAQ but since I am a nice guy I will
tell you 30ohm is early sender. ggg

SORRY I ruined your day Matt!!

Like Steve said, EM senders are 30 Ohm, meaning 30 ohms at full and near 0-ohms at empty.

Thanks guys, I was on the side of the road and search wasn't exactly practical. I did skim through my manual though which stays IN the car. Damn thing vapor locked too, not a fun commute home.

The 30 ohms is the resistance of the sending unit, not the resistance of the fuel gauge. SO 0 to 30 ohms reading from the wire at the gas gauge to ground with the sending unit in the circuit, and the gauge unplugged.

A good quick check to test the wiring and gauge - pull wire from sender - gauge should read full. Ground wire - gauge should read EMPTY. If it passes these tests the sender is bad or not grounded.

Thanks guys. It was indeed out of fuel. I parked it a few weeks ago and thought I had filled it. Gauge was reading almost full when I took it out on Tuesday. I can commute a full week without having to fill it so I figured I was safe as it was only Thursday. I guess I hadn't filled it all the way up. Usually when the gauge doesn't work right it gets pinned past full which is what it did last night.

Now that both gauges are dead, maybe its time to make a simple cluster? Anybody know if a mechanical autometer gauge will work off of the stock cable?

Most fuel gauges work opposite the EM Corvair.
Sounds like you have a bad connection somewhere and not a bad gauge.
The wire from the sender goes through the harness to a connector just left of the center dash speaker and then to the gauge. That wire has a problem somewhere if it failed the test I gave you. (Doesn't go to empty when you ground it where it connects to the sender)
The gauge has power and ground since it pegs full.

Yeah, could be. I have to check it when I have time. Add it to the list i guess.

I have zero ohms at the sender. I also have zero ohms at the wire connected to the gauge. (The other wire has the correct 12v)

Zero equals empty. First thought is a
heavy float.

Yeah but gauge reads full and tank now has at least 3 gallons in it. I have to pull the cluster out. It was raining tonight so I didn't have time to really get behind the dash. I just took a reading at the wire and at the sender. At least I know I don't have a broken wire.

Tonight I'm going to run a continuity test of the sender wire. Then I'll do Joels test just to make sure of my findings.

OK! I have 1.7ohms coming from the sender. Checked it at the gauge and still reads 1.7 ohms. This in itself could be a problem since I put about 3 gallons in it. Anyway, I then tried to ground the gauge with the ignition on, nothing happened. I checked, I still have 12v on the other side of the gauge. It sits still pinned past full. So maybe I have a sender problem, but the gauge is also dead it would seem. So... a 0-30ohm auto-meter gauge? Arctic White Autometer pre-65 Maybe a matching speedo?

The gauge has 2 coils. One pulls it full and the other pulls it empty.
So you should be able to read some resistance between the 2 tabs on the gauge. (between power tab and sender tab). Not sure what it should be but from your symptoms you should read open. You may be able to see what is wrong by taking the gauge apart.
I guess the Autometer gauge will work as long as it reads the correct direction.
