push rod tubes
Posted by: cnolson ()
Date: March 12, 2019 11:28AM

hi, my name is carl, i'm new to this group, and new to corvairs. i live in the seattle area. i recently purchased a 66 monza convertable, 140hp, powerglide, love the car. i do have a question, one of many i'm sure. is anybody familiar with these pushrod tubes? they're the same length and diameter as the stock tubes, but a heavier guage metal, machined ends, and two "o" ring grooves per end, there aren't any markings on them. i got them from the nephew of a corvair guy that passed away.he's cleaning out his uncles shop. i hope i posted the pictures correctly, my first post so bear with me. thank you.

Welcome to the CCF!!

Your FILE size is great.... viewing size was too large... use 600x800 to be safe.

Those are aftermarket most likely... not needed with VITON plastic O-rings today...

Don't throw them away!

Yes, they are interesting. The double o-ring is not needed as has been said already with the use of Viton.

If you leave the lower shrouds off and want the WOW factor use 1 o-ring groove and go for it!

Are they aluminum or steel? Put a magnet to them and see if it sticks.

I have stock tubes if your interested in trading aluminum for steel.

In the photos they almost look like three piece units with the O-ring grooved ends separate pieces from the tube. Cool looking though.

Just a guess... but I know the guys who put Corvair engines in experimental aircraft have come up with some over the top, one of a kind machined things.

My Brother is helping repair one with the starter ring gear on the crank pulley end. The woodruff key gave out!!!

I need a couple of those for my broken heads. Maybe the second o-ring would be in an area that is still good.

I've seen those before. Someone was selling them years ago. Hopefully someone will chime in and identify them.

Enjoy the Corvair!

There was a company called Magnificent Machines that made some cool custom parts for "Fly Vairs". A lot of parts were carbon fiber but machined parts were also made. They were out of Poulsbo, Washington.

I recall ads for these tubes in the early 70’s. They were JJF tubes (the creator’s initials). The title of the ad was, “Aspirin for the Corvair headache”.

Viton O rings were available but these tubes allowed you to put two O rings on each end which added additional protection against leaks.

I never saw an actual set. Viton worked for me.

I also recall the ads (being 'older than dirt' I remember lots of "stuff")!

I thought about using them on one of my engines but the Vinton O-rings worked so well I decided I didn't need to spend the money!!

Even with viton O-rings, my Corvair sometimes seems like it's leaking like a sieve. I'm pretty sure most of that is on me, like all of my Corvair problems. It would be nice to get a pair of these. Please report back whatever you guys find out.
