Can you do this with Your Small Valve Heads?
Posted by: vairmech ()

A lot of you know how big the hole is for the small exhaust valve, it isn't very big and has a lot of restrictions. So what do you do? You remove a LOT of metal. There is a reason for doing all of this extra work the heads will also have 140 exhaust stacks installed.

Here is the start.

And then here is what you can do after a lot of material removal. Try this on a stock head.

I did mention something about 140 exhaust tubes didn't I, here is the bored area for the stack. It really has to be offset like you see so it will clear the head stud and push tube.

And then when you do that you also need to make the room for the exhaust gasses to get out, otherwise there is no reason to put the 140 stacks in. I am actually being a little conservative here on the material removed, I didn't want to take the chance of going through the wall. I think there is enough opening there that the restriction is now the valve and seat it's self.

Ken,

Are you still using the same stock exhaust valve size with the bigger 140 tubes?

Also guessing intake valve is the same stock size??

Yes, started doing it in the early 1980's.
Really wakes up a 180 Turbo engine, even with a stock cam.
Boost went from 7 to 14 psi with a properly clearanced 709 turbo unit [ stock carb , more free exhaust]

Tom is finishing up a set of heads for me. They started life as 95hp heads, re-worked chambers, 140 exh valves and tubes, +.200 intakes. These heads along with a few other tricks should really wake my 66 180 coupe up. It’s also getting a Yenko single close trans, so I’ll be able to stay in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd longer which should be really sweet too.

Well...I had it all done to two sets of 140 heads.

Inconel, beryllium copper, manganese bronze...etc etc.

This set of heads is for a 2.9 engine, normally aspirated. It will also eventually be fuel injected.

The valve sizes are stock and yes it will really wake up the engine. This is being coupled with my FC cam and will be going into an Ultravan.

I want to use the 140 heads, cut one of the carb pads off to get it under the sheet metal, Turbo, Powerglide, stall converter and 3.27 gear, maybe 3.08. Maybe when I retire from racing smiling smiley

I did this to my 95 heads but I haven't installed them yet. Going on an 80hp motor with stock tubes and valves. Should be a decent upgrade as I hear the porting alone helps. I wasn't doing it for performance gains originally, but I figured why not?
