Re-iterate - Correct steering gearbox fluid
Posted by: Tom Rahochik ()

Back in 2016 I recommended this gearbox fluid and someone had a problem
locating it within the website. Go to www.studebaker-intl.com. Then go to the
shop button and put steering gearbox fluid in the description box. Sold in a
caulking tube for $20, this is the correct semi-fluid needed for our Saginaw
manual gearboxes. Not sure if Amsoil makes a similar product.......

Here is the Amsoil equivalent, Semi-Fluid 00 Synthetic EP Grease

The only issue with this is it only comes in a 5 gal and it comes with a $445 price tag!

If there were enough people that wanted this I would get the pail and repackage with enough to fill a gearbox.

Most local farm and tractor supply houses sell a tubed grease in either O or double O

John Deere markets a grease in double 0, I can't remember the name right now, but it is CORN something, for a corn picker or ????, It works really well,
I used it some time ago when I rebuilt a few boxes.

Castrol SHL 00, available in small caulking tubes. I think it’s been renamed Castrol Spheerol SHL 00 now. Easiest to find in a small quantity of all those mentioned so far.

Based on a previous tip on this forum, I bought a tube of cornhead grease from a local John Deere store. It was about $4 as I recall. One tube will last me a long time.

Yup, went out to my nearest Tractor Supply and bought a couple quarts. Had the stuff in stock. Not bad for $5.29. Certainly beats difficult to locate overpriced Lubriplate.

With all of this 00 grease talk, I still use my Amsoil chassis grease with about 10% STP or equivalent added in the box.

Where do you find STP today? Haven't seen it on the store shelves since the 1990's.

I am still using Royco MS 22 for my steering gear box. Free to me and a very good grease. I will be using it on my second rebuild soon.

Hmm, Ecklers has it for $10 a quart plus shipping. Might be a toss up if only ordering one quart (and who would need more?grinning smiley).

I went to my local Tractor Supply to pick some up. They showed 2 in their computer but no one could find them. I decided to just walk the whole store. I found them on the back wall with the 3 point hitch parts. No other lubricants anywhere in the area. I don't know if all the stores are arranged the same but maybe this will help someone.

Only need it if you rebuild your steering gearbox. If your gearbox is leaking greasy fluid, time for new seals minimum and reserve grease. There is a plug on the side to add it though. But box is coming out for seal replacement t. IMO.
