Hopefully cool new toy Ultrasonic Cleaner
Posted by: joelsplace ()

Hopefully this will be a good thing to have. It's big enough to hold a differential or transmission case. It has a pump also. Is this a common thing? I didn't realize they used pumps. I don't really know anything about them. What kind of cleaning solution do you guys use in yours?

How much did that set you back? I had the small HF one and it worked, until it didn't, but was too small for a oil cooler.

They are only $6500 new. A little more than HF but I can clean cases. Engine cases only half at a time unless the studs are out. It's 18x18x20" inside.

Simple Green and water. But before anything goes in my small cleaner, it is cleaned with mineral spirits to get the heavy accumulations off.

Thanks Al. That's what I was looking for. What ratio do you use?

I'll run parts through my jet cleaner first and then do the final cleaning in the ultrasonic. It claims normal cleaning only takes 5-10 minutes. That sounds too good to be true.

I've never really looked at Simple Green before. There sure are a lot of different kinds. Home, Industrial, Aviation...

Soft metals I use the Simple Green Aviation formula. Steel, regular simple green works. I have a 1.5 gallon cleaner. I usually pour 1/2 cup to the water. Works fine for me.

Does the regular Simple Green work better? Seems to be the same price as aviation.

I think I'll order some of the aviation type but until it comes in Home Depot carries Simple Green HD. Is it any good? I want something to play with now.

I have cleaned about a bazillion carburetors in mine. I just bought a new one recently. SharperTek. Made in Detroit. Works great. I use simple green. The regular stuff. 50/50 with water.

Simple Green Aviation leaves the aluminum shiny bright. I love Super Clean for steel. Caustic, turns aluminum gray and strips most paints. Full strength on both and I heat the Super Clean.

Super Clean seems to come in different types like Simple Green does. Wal-mart sells a Degreaser and a cleaner/degreaser. ? I wonder if it would bother my pump?

Super Clean is OK for a good chemical pump but killed my HF washer pump.

Good to know. I probably shouldn't use it in my Ultrasonic's pump.
Thanks!

Joel, I've used all three Simple Green products. Not that I'm a green weenie, but its all safe disposal stuff. The aircraft must have some brightners it makes aluminum bright, it my also change the colors of some plastics, lighter color than you started with. Its a great white wall tire cleaner. The green and purple seem to work better on grease when heated. The green seems to be the easiest to get completely rinsed off. I have Prime so getting any one type is the click of the mouse. Have fun!

I didn't look the model up so my question is what frequency is your unit? There has been much research done on ultrasonic cleaning solutions. There are different chemical compositions for different cleaning purposes. My main objective is pulling out as much carbon as possible from cast aluminum, so I purchased a branded cleaner for that purpose. There are many companies and cleaners, you can even use plain water for some cleaning.
The 40Khz units are the more common frequencies for general purpose cleaning. 25Khz is for hitting things harder for more difficult cleaning operations of parts that will hold up to the more powerful implosion/ cavitation action of the liquid cleaning solution. They even go up to the 100Khz for delicate things like jewelry and fine articles. But remember that aluminum items are susceptible to erosion from too long in the bath. You probably already know how to use aluminum foil for testing the units performance.

Their website talks about frequency a lot but doesn't say what this one is. I sent them an email. It does say it has 2000W of ultrasonic power. They have a similar model that is 1000W.
Actually I don't know much at all about Ultrasonic cleaners. I do know they will erode even cast iron if left in it long enough. Just like diesel engine liners.
