oil temp

Being new at air cooled car engines , I have a question. Presume a Corvair driver is going to make a trip , say 25 miles and the outside temp is around 90 degrees , in general what would the oil temp run ? Also , would it be wise to have an oil temp gauge installed ? Larry Cooper

I don't think you need an oil temp gauge on a street car. I do however take an occasional shot at my oil filter with my non contact IR thermometer to where it is.

I like my cruising, up to temperature readings to be slightly above the boiling point of water. 220-240.

IMO it is more important to keep the cooling system proper (no air leaks, clean oil cooler, clean cylinders and heads)
than to know the oil temperature.

Having driven untold miles and hours at a time, sometimes non-stop, in a Corvair with no oil temp indication and no issues, keep the oil changed and don't worry about it.

Even on my slightly built street engines I've never had an oil temp gauge and never had a lower end issue but again I kept the oil changed, I did the standard 3000 mile change when I could afford it in the early days.

I have occasionally checked mine by taking the filter temp with a laser. The hottest I got it, driving with 90+ temps and climbing the mountain was 106ºC. That is when I discovered that my light came on at about 105, instead of 132ºC as the manual says. I replaced the sensor and never again have seen the oil temp/pressure light go on.

Keep in mind that Richard1 has an oil temp overheat switch rather than a head over heat switch in his 60. His 132*C translates to about 296* F, just about as hot as you ever want to get oil unless you change it very soon afterwards. The 106*C translates into 223*F which is just about perfect oil temp.

With my Custom Instrument Panel from Dakota Digital I am using the "Water Temp Gauge to read the Oil Temp in my Clark's Oil Pan.

So far (I have about 100 miles on it so far) the Oil Temp seems to steady out at about 220 degrees F.

And make sure the air inlet side of the oil cooler is kept clean. Chevy even designed it to be easy to check! Check it now!

Then's when a gauge is of little help, whereas an idiot light (or even a buzzer) is more effective at getting the driver's attention. So I have to agree more-so with Tim on this one.

telltale glow of the gen/fan light will
announce the loss of a belt.

I guess when I listed a few of the cooling system components (not a comprehensive list nor a complete list by any means) I failed to mention having a fan belt in good condition properly tensioned. My bad. I sure agree with Seth though on the cleanliness of the oil cooler. CHECK IT NOW (and periodically). I usually check mine at every oil change (overkill?).

All depends on your driving environment. How much air borne dust and how many cottonwood trees are in your area.

I don't have oil temperature gauges on any of my cars but I wish I did. One good sized leaf sucked into the fan can block a large part of the oil cooler. I check mine at oil changes or any time I'm in the area.

If you use an excellent synthetic oil such as Amsoils' 15W-40 Heavy Duty diesel and marine oil (stock # AME ) you will never ever have a problem with your oil because of temp. I've used it for over 38 years with nothing but super results.
As a matter of fact, for research purposes in their mechanical lab, when pushing the oil to its' breaking point on purpose to try and glean meaningful data about the oil because it works so well- the engine blew up before the oil failed!!!!
Amsoil said they ran this test under extreme conditions as if you were towing continuously at highway speeds, up hill, for weeks. Oil temps exceeded 300*. They try to run the test for 300 hours. (Or until the engine blew up. It was a GM 3.8L )
But one could ask at this point, if the oils' so good, why did the engine blow up? This had absolutely nothing to do with the oil. But it's called "valve seat recession". They used to put lead in the gas to help lube the valve seats in the old days. But now-a-days, the valves don't get any help. When valve seats recede, the valve no longer seats evenly. The end result is a loss of heat-transfer that overheats and erodes the valve, as well as an uneven side load that causes the valve to bend slightly on every cycle. They said the extreme, 1,500* exhaust gas temps, combined with the constant stress of unevenly eroded valve seats eventually lead to valve failure, snapping a valve in half and destroying the engine.
Now that's my kind of oil!!! Like I said- this stuff really works!!!!!

Since the oil helps cool the engine you are in trouble if the oil is running 300 degrees.

Agreed. I run my car all summer to and from work (about 50 miles a day) beating the daylights out of my little 80hp. Never had an issue.
