5 minute epoxy fuel tank
Posted by: joelsplace ()
Date: February 10, 2019 05:19PM

My Harbor Freight 5 minute epoxy says it takes 24 hours to cure. At an average of 40 degrees with high humidity how long should I wait to add fuel?

If you can, it is probably better to add "some" heat and wait the whole 24 hours... I've not had good results using that kind of repair and I'm absolutely sure it was not the epoxy that caused it to not work well. I believe it was a combination of not waiting long enough, insufficient temperature and cleaning/preparation. If I would have thought about that stuff, I would have at least put a heat lamp/ incandesant bulb near the repair
area for the duration of the cure time.

Don't know about HF epoxy, I like a lot of there stuff. When it comes to gas a oil I trust Marine Tex. I have some repairs that are more than 20 years old. I agree, heat is your friend not matter what.

A heat lamp is a good idea. I'm just using the epoxy for thread sealer. I put a self threading screw in the hole with epoxy on the threads. It has been sitting for about 30 hours. I'll put a lamp on it and let it sit until Wednesday since I have to work all day Tuesday.

I just used it because that is what was handy. I probably should have used JB Weld.

You would still have to keep heat on the JBweld.

I find it easier to solder the screw to the tank.winking smiley

Of course, with proper safety!!!!hot smiley

No waiting for epoxy to dry, can be done with gasoline seeping from hole.

Again, has to be performed safely, do not guess what is safe!!!eye popping smiley

Interesting. Sounds like a much better repair. What kind of soldier and heat source?

I'm super curious too. If there's a bit of water in a water line, soldering with a torch is tough. Gas in a tank, no torch? How do we pull this off? confused smiley

Guys..torch is fine as long as hole is small and the tank is full.... done for decades when tanks sprung leaks regularly! Dirt roads... bumpy..

I'm not dumb enough to put a torch on a stream of gasoline.

No torch or other open flame for my repairs. Too scary.....eye popping smiley

My tool of choice is a 100 watt American Beauty Soldering iron, unplugged during the actual soldering/working of lead. Very leery of sparks with gasoline at high temperatures, since it is no producing lots of vapor in the area. No Weller soldering guns!

I will not give a "do it this way" on the internet, just because of lawyers.....And people who might do it slightly different and get explosive results. hot smiley

I have shown people in person.

Only known safe way is to remove tank, drain and clean tank, then solder holes up. I do use a very short sheet metal screw if the hole is larger than 1/8", cleaning and tinning all the parts before final soldering. If hole is larger than screw head, then I cut a piece of copper flashing (a green length (10') of copper gutter fell off a truck in front of the shop one day and I ran out in traffic to get it when I saw the truck keep driving away!drinking smiley) clean it and tin it and solder that over the bad area.

The secret to successful soldering of gas tanks is clean well, flux and tin the surfaces before final soldering. Solder does not stick to dirt, rust, oil, paint, undercoat... well at least the gasoline leaking has started the cleaning process.

Flux and tinning is the secret, but its not really a secret.

Watching people solder, it is a big secret, it seems.

Had to instruct a coworker recently about wetting the tip of a soldering iron to get the heat into the part to be soldered. No one had ever shown him. Sped up soldering terminals by at least three times.

The guy in the video blew the vapor out with C02 and all the gas was in the other side of the tank. Totally different situation.

Gas, itself, is not flammable. It's the air around it that is volatile..
You can actually put a lit match out in a can of gas. (If you're fast/stupid enough!)cool smiley
