battery tender
Posted by: David Malcolm ()

While I do try to get my 69 out all year round sometimes it just too cold, too much salt and etc. Think I could use a battery tender for it. Any brand/model recommendations.

Use the Battery Minder. Northern Tool has them on sale last month for $19.99. $24.99 were $54.99 last week. They have temperature compensation and automatic desulphation.

Battery Minder, like it much better than my battery tenders.

The desulfator in the minder WORKS! I have had batteries that were so,so end up working better after the winter on the Battery Minder.

I ruined my old Schumacher trickle/maintainer this past fall. Picked up a NOCO Genius G3500, came very highly recomneded. Amazon.

Beware the Herbor Freight maintainers. Lots of reviews claim the voltage is too high and the fry batteries.

What did you do to ruin your maintainer? I have several Schumacher units.

Never had a problem with HF maintainers I run about 5 of the cheapos and 3 of the more pricey ones. The Vair has the in vehicle unit, the BMW bike and UTV have the remote unit with the quick disconnect plug. They DO NOT claim de-sulphation, but are high frequency chargers.

I have had great results from Northern Tool's Battery Minder.

Might be interesting to check the float voltage on those HF units. Frequency with a DC charger would be associated with desulphation.

I always check, normally 13.1 13.2 once stabilized.

I'll check mine when I get a chance. I have 2 new electronic Battery Tenders and several of 3 different models of Battery Minders.

I also vote for the NOCO Genius G3500. I have been using them for the last 2 years, and have had zero issues with them.

The NOCO sounds really cool. Where is the best deal?

I found the best deals on eBay, and occasionally at swap meets.

I have several Battery Tenders. I get the waterproof ones. I also have a couple of the dual output ones to charge my mowers and ATV. Only one waterproof unit has failed so far. It was replaced under store exchange.

I had a car battery on a BT for now 8 years waiting on the Monza coupe to be made road ready. It has been used numerous times to do tests on the car and to power a winch I have. The Battery Tender just warned me this week that the battery was not able to be charged any more. 8 years on a BT before failure can't be unusual.

I am probably going to 'jinx' myself with this but here goes:

I bought my Rampside in March, 2009 -- nearly ten years ago.

At that time, there was a battery of indeterminate age in the truck.

When the truck is parked, be it for a few days during driving season or for a few months during the Winter, I keep a Battery Tender on it. It is the Battery Tender brand, purchased circa 2001.

The battery that was in the truck when I bought it is still in there!
