Tire size for 17x8 wheels on a LM
Posted by: Jamison82 ()
Date: February 02, 2019 06:51PM

What size tires are you guys running with 17 inch wheels. Mine are 17x8 with a 4.5 inch backspace. They will go on a 1965 convertible that had not yet been lowered in the front.

I’ve read about some using 215/40/17 and 225/50/17Front 255/50/17Rear

Please share you’re tires size and pros and cons to it. Thanks

Pretty sure 255 50s will be way too tall. Lots of tire size calculators on the web to check. 225/45R17s are about the right height on an EM.

Info on 17 x 8's with staggered tires on my wife's 4-dr found here;

Another similar application here where I was working with 17 x 8 rims and 235/45R17 tires.

DANGER, OPINION AHEAD!eye popping smiley

I know it's all the fad/rage today to go with wagon wheel/dub/oversize rims on cars, in order to pimp it out. But why? Anything larger than a 15" looks out of place on a Corvair, and in bad taste, tongue sticking out smiley IMHO. Any car that has to use huge diameter wheels is merely using them to make up for lack of styling superiority (and maybe a small ?????) grinning smiley The Corvair doesn't NEED huge rims, as it has style and class in abundance. smoking smiley Huge rims only conflict with the Corvair's inherent beauty. Plus, the larger the rim, the more expensive the tire.

All that may be my opinion, but it's also just plain good taste. Your mileage (and taste, or lack thereof) may differ.

17s seem to have the best tire selection. They also handle drastically better.
I'll agree they don't look as good but that is at the bottom of my priority list.

Recently I was looking at tire size comparisons to see what sizes would retain the approximate 25" diameter and 827 (plus or minus) revolutions per mile on a late model.
(Yes I am aware that the 700-13 tire was approximately 24 1/2" & rev's per mile are 825)

Remember however that the same size tire could vary depending on tire brand.
This is where I came up with these numbers for 25" tire Diameters. [tiresize.com]

These tire sizes are what I came up with for 17 Inch wheels.
205-50-17, 215-45-17, 225-45-17, 235-45-17, 245-40-17, 255-40-17

For what it is worth, these are approximate sizes for other wheel diameters.

16 Inch wheels:
195-60-16, 195-65-16, 215-55-16, 225-50-16, 245-45-16

15 Inch wheels:
195-65-15, 205-60-15, 215-60-15

14 Inch wheels:
185-75-14, 195-70-14, 205-70-14, 235-60-14, 225-60-14

13 Inch wheels:

Thanks for all the feedback. I plan on going with 215/45/17 in front and 235/45/17 in back. I’ll post a pick later tonight...if this SoCal rain ever stops.

I definitely appreciate the different tastes in style. I notice my tastes have changed over the years and I like everything from concourse to resomod, even ...rat rods. I thought I’d never like those. I’m going to stick closer to restomod with this car. I like the sporty look of it. Maybe it’s because I grew up at the end of a time with big tires and was exposed to more cars with big rims. I’m not into the “Dub” scene, I just like larger wheels. But I don’t mind if someone else has a different opinion than me.

Thanks again for the tips, especially you AZDave

Another good combo is 205/55R16 front, 225/50R16 rear. This is the same combo used on Porsche 911s and Ferrari 328s back in the 80s so tire availability is excellent. I have these on my Corsa on Rally's and like the look and clearance up front. The speedo is pretty close too.

245/40 is a good size on the rear if you're running 215/45 up front. Those two sizes have almost identical height so they look the same except for the rears being wider. That's the combo I run on 17x8s.

The big rim/rubber band tires can look good. My only reason for avoiding them is the harsher ride and you have almost no side wall give that can help out old car suspension geometry to improve tire contact are.

I wanted the "old school" ballon tire look from the 60's and went with 14" tires. The number one comment from folks I take for rides --- "This rides and handles well for an old car".

Exactly why I'm doing the same with my project car, 66vairman. I have a '14 Impala (pseudo-Impala, I call it) with 18" rims and short sidewalls. Rides nice on smooth pavement, and with two turns, lock to lock, it handles well. But you feel every tar strip on the road. And the huge rims makes up for it's less than stellar styling.

Jamison, glad you took my comments in the spirit in which they were meant, with a nugget of humor. I've seen some pretty ridiculous wheels/car arrangements. Guess there's no accounting for some people's tastes (or lack thereof) and choices (good, bad, and ugly). Some should be arrested by the fashion police and charged with inflicting eye damage, polluting the landscape, and desecrating a perfectly good car. grinning smiley Gotta laugh at 'em!

AZDave, the coupe's definitely too over the top for me. Even the wheel design doesn't appeal to me, but that's just my impression of what I see in the picture.

While the 4 door has (to me) a nicer-looking wheel design, they too are still too large for my taste. If it were me, I'd take 'em down to 15's at most, and that would be fantastic looking. But that is just me. As I said, everybody's taste is different.

I really like the 16's and 17's. Dave, what wheel are you running on the coupe? They appear to be BMW-style 42ish BBS wheels. They look great!

Yes, BBS Style 42 on the coupe.

BBS RC090 on the 4-door. Those hide the sight of those awful drum bakes.

Contrary to our esteemed members, Mark, with his little wheels, and Phil, with his fondness of those oversized monstrosities, I like most wheel and tire combos that fall right in the middle ground.
I do not like wheel&tire combos that require the height of a car to be raised.
If you can fit it in and keep the car at a stock height or even drop it a touch, I will most likely approve of it.
Although, my personal taste is to try and keep the custom wheels looking at least period correct for the car in question.
That being said though, Dave, I HIGHLY approve of your cars, very tasteful!
Chance, those look good also.
