What constitutes a "New" Topic and for how long?
Posted by: Caraholic4life ()

I understand the concept of "New Topic" but how long does one qualify as "New"?

Looking back through the list, I see a thread dating back to December 28th that has at the moment 605 Views and 24 replies and is still showing as a "New Topic".

This particular thread was initially posted on December 26th and titled "Forum(s) question" at 12:07AM. [corvaircenter.com]

Does a topic need to have a minimum number of views or replies, or be a specific number of day old to no longer be considered "New"?

I am simply curious.

It is new until you read it. Or you select Mark All Messages Read at bottom of the forum list.

I understand that concept but there are posts I have read, and suspect some I have even replied to that, for me still come up as "New".

Maybe it is just my wonderful computer or software in it.

It becomes "new" every time there is a new post in the topic. Even a 5 year old post with 10,000 views becomes new again if someone posts in it. If you read it, the new goes away. The cookies in your browser track what you have viewed and update the new status accordingly.

Someone may have added on more post after you read it. Take a look and see if the NEW disappears.

Sometimes you have to refreash your page to get rid of the NEW designation if no replies have been made.

OK, that makes sense, sort of. It indicates there is a "New" unread reply even though it is not really a "New" topic.

Additionally, there is a time period, once exceeded, whereby a new post that you have not read will lose its new status. In the forum I administrate, this time period is adjustable. I am not familiar with the forum software used by this website enough to know whether or not the time period is adjustable, but it exists nonetheless.

The NEW designation only applies to your sign in. If you log out. No NEW designations anywhere.

I am NOT a computer nerd by any means of the word, but I do not think that this statement is quite correct.
I follow CCF throughout the day at work, and then once again when I get home.
My home browser doe not know what I looked at, while at work, BUT, what I viewed at work, does NOT still show as "NEW" at home.
I tend to think that the tracking of pages viewed on CCF happens at the CCF end of things.

Also if a topic has multiple pages all pages need to be viewed to clear the "new topic". Also the cookies have nothing to do showing.

I stand corrected on the cookies thing. I should have realized that since I view the page on multiple devices.
