Racing a Corvair???
Posted by: Revlane ()

newbie question.

I would love to race a corvair but does that actually happen with the original air cooled engines or are most race cars converted to V* or other liquid cooled engines.

Many race with the original engine. Some close to stock, some heavily modified. And yes, there are racers out there who have converted to other engines.

the first place to start is where are you from so you could connect with other like minded corvair people then do a search for locale sports car clubs in your area , until I got my first corvair in 2000 I had no idea that autocross racing existed,( you can autocross a compleetly stock corvair it is inexpensive compaired to any other type of competition and quite safe as you are only racing the clock) i am often the only corvair there my car and I get many compliments and it has developed into a competitive car in the class that it is in, and yes it is corvair powered modified turbo power. I don't know what went wrong when you tried face book but I would encourage you to try again because it is now the most active corvair connection in the world, if you go to the corvair racer's page you can see videos of corvairs racing and keep up with all the events happening ,

Mike, you are in New York.... The NECC is across the river!

All they do is hold road races!

Prepped air cooled racers abound!

Fastest Drag Vairs 12 second ets!

Bonneville Landspeed 173 mph..

An aircooled Corvair was in the Final race for the SCCA National Championship / GT3000 class as late as 2005! [ no factory backing! ]

Corvairs are American Porsches.... NOT Camaros!

Wow....thank you so much for letting me know abot the NECC. That's so cool.

As soon as I get a corvair purchased and running I'm definitely attending their events. This seems like an awesome way to hit the track.

This happened this past fall at VIR, Virginia International Raceway, with all Corvairs. Only the #4 on the left is V-8 powered. I should probably mention that you need to have a race license for this kind of racing. Yes, NECC has track days where you need minimal safety equipment.

The active Corvair road racers have been picking a Vintage event every year and showing up as a group. I think it's at Mid Ohio this year. If you want to catch the bug go there and hang around, someone will welcome some help.

There is more than one Corvair for sale that is already fully setup for road racing. Prices are probably what you would spend for a decent stock car plus basic improvements. Ready to go get your competition license. Buy and drive.

Where are you located? Lots of guys involved over here on the east coast. SVRA, SCCA, Autocross? Corvairs compete in all of these. All the ones I know including mine use the original Corvair drivetrain. There is only one V8 I know of in SCCA, SVRA.
