Is there a way without opening up the diff and counting teeth to identify what gear ratio diff I have? I dont see much in the way of numbers on the case.

year? EMs have a flat spot with a stamped number. LMs have the number stamped into the casting next to the trans mission mating line and it is very hard to read because it doesn't have a flat spot and is often poorly stamped.

Counting teeth is the only way to positively know what ratio you have. Many have been changed so the original stampings may be meaningless these days.

Look at the above thread from a couple month's ago on a similar topic regarding late model differentials.
In this thread, I included photo's of my '65 Differential showing it's code number and location. Date: October 28, 2018 07:14PM

Also look at the below thread found under Faq's It is found under:

Clark's "letter codes are stamped on the right side near where it bolts to the transmission. Usually poorly stamped and hard to see"

That's all fine and dandy, hopefully no one has been inside and changed the ratio. There are little tell tale signs that can tell you if it is original or not. The gaskets are one. If it has the original cork gasket then it probably is pretty original. They do exist.
