Experience with the FC Front Disk Brake Kit from Corvair1
Posted by: Intrinsic ()
Date: January 07, 2019 09:44AM

I want to add front disk brakes and a dual master cylinder to my 63 Rampside, and I am evaluating potential kits.

Does anyone have any experience with the kit on the Corvair1 web site?

Its listed as: 1961-65 F/C Front Disc Brake kit, #RBP08

For one third of the price, minus the master cyl., you can get the kit for 55-64 full size Chev. from Summit. Direct bolt on for FC's. I have one on my Rampy and am well satisfied.

Jerry, what did you use for a master cylinder?

Correction to my prior post. Meant to say Speedway instead of Summit.

Larry, the master cylinder was already in my Rampside when I got it. It is a dual
chamber from Clarks I think. Seems to work fine with the kit

Jerry, did you have to change your front rims to 15", or go to 14" rims that were designed for disc brakes. Were you able to keep the stock 14" rims?

Thanks, for folks running the Speedway kit, does it fit with the original wheels?

Thanks

From the Speedway website:

•11" Rotors
•5 on 4-3/4" - bolt pattern
•Metric calipers
•Calipers mount behind axle (rearward)
Will work with 14" & larger wheels intended for use with disc brakes
•Bearings, pads, brackets included
•Seals and hoses
•Hardware included
•Increases trac-width 7/8" per side
•For '55-'64 Chevy fullsize cars.

Fred and Glen, I had changed to 15" rally wheels prior to installing the kit. If no one answers the question I will try a stock FC wheel and post the results.

I have 2 speedway kits on 2 fc's.Been on for 3 years. No problems. No proportioning valve needed.Used 1975 nova manual disc brake master.Toe in alignment will need to be adjusted as steering arms are spaced differently.Brake pedal effort is a little hard but it is nice to stop straight everytime repeatedly.

I tried the FC wheel and it does rub on the caliper. I think a little could be ground off the caliper for clearance. White areas in picture is where grinding is needed.

Hi, I used the Speedway 2" drop spindle 55-57 kit with the metric calipers. Will not fit stock wheels. I used 15" x 5 American racing wheels. 1" bore dual master, no proportioning valve, stops great,

Thanks Jerry

This eliminates this kit from our consideration, Unfortunately the Corvair1 kit doesn't fit the OE wheels either.

Thanks for fitting the OE wheels. Its a great help to finally visualize the problem with the fitment.

Thanks again

I used some 14" nova rally wheels on the front. No rubbing and my 3 prong wire caps install fine on these wheels.

I installed a kit from Clarks on a Rampside and it went pretty well. They supply some parts and some parts they tell you what to buy locally. Some of the parts needed a little massaging to fit, I chalked it up to Chinese parts that may not have fit well on the original application either. It was not the Clarks parts that needed work but the local parts.

I don't want to divert anyone away from Corvair1, anything I've ever gotten from Raffee has been good and he is a hale fellow well met. If you get it all from him it probably won't need any massaging.

When I go to do my Van I want to combine the disc brake project with drop spindles in order to kill two birds with one stone. I hate the drag-ass FC look and raising the rear is difficult.
