Well had a few days setback because the boiler's heat exchange in my shop started to leak so had to tear into that and fix it!

So all piston assemblies are within .7 grams.

I measured for pushrod length and my order is on the way from Smith Bros.

I had two cylinders that were about .0004 undersized, made up a torque plate and used a old case half to clamp them and used my Sunnen hone to get them in spec with 280 stone.

Washed them out well and used the oil/paper towel trick to make sure no residue.

Checked all ring gaps and they are near the upper limit of stock specs. Ken Hand said that he builds turbo motors at the top spec anyway.

At this point I am ready to do the final cleaning and start assembling!

Starting on the final assembly, have a pre prep area where things are organized before final cleaning occurs.

Clean assembly area, it begins.

Everything lubed with assembly lube and cam lube on lobes.

Don't forget the sealant on 4 corners!

Got bell housing on, could not find an extra set of bolts. FYI, I found that the length of bell housing bolts were 1-3/8 for the upper 7, the bottom 2 were 1-9/16, no washers on the lower 4.

Slid on plastic garbage bag to keep it clean and called it a night, didn't get more done because I had to fix broken cable on garage door!!! All these dang fixes around the house getting in the way.

Looks great, don't forget, baffles before push rod tubes. Many of us have screwed this up at least once.

Put the pistons in the jugs, with this tool. It is amazing how easy its was compared to the old style. I was able to press them into the cylinders with my thumb and no rings trying to jump out in between the compressor and jug.

Got them all installed with the lower gaskets in place.

Latest update, Screwed up slightly grinning smiley

Put headgaskets on one side and torqued, then realized that because of removing the step the heads are closer to the case. As I was doing final torque on valve stem bolts it didn't quite feel right, bottoming out. Took one off and sure enough there was an impression in the top of the case bolt.

I had to pull the heads and since they were steel gaskets they are junk.....

I put a plastic bag over the engine and poked out the lower studs and ground them all down about 1/8.

Also, had to put the pushrod tubes in the lathe and take off some so that they didn't stick out and prevent oil from returning to the case.

Also, the roller rockers did not sit square on some of the valves, I ground a slot in the guides and heated that area to red hot and let cool to anneal it a bit so that I did not crack them. just in case they were really hard. The paste in the picture absorbs heat to prevent it from changing the heat treating of the rest of the part.

Here are the tubes and guides after install. After bending the guides I tiged them to prevent future movement.

The next item I had to deal with was making clearance for the roller rocker poly locks to the valve cover. Regan had suggested that I cut down the allen locks and the nuts to lower their height. This gained me quite a bit of room.

Chris, Texas yenko dude, Said that the Ecno Clarks Valve covers is what he used with rollers and he took a small cut on the inside for additional room.

I did this and I also milled the gasket surface dead flat for good measure.

Here it is ready for the valve covers all lifter preload set at 3/4 turn:

Last pic of the VHT Painted pushrod tubes and painted valve covers.

Ok, now that I have my missing slinger taken care of, here are a few pics of the progress.

All items associated with the rear cover have been taken care of, new oil pump , properly shimmed, New harmonic balancer, temporary fan until my Nash Fan is made smiling smiley

In trying to keep as much heat in the exhaust system for the turbo I hot jet coated the exhaust manifolds. I only drive it in good weather so a slight loss in heat for the inside is no big deal.

Besides little items hear and there I need to build the 4 carbs for boost. Two of them that I have were converted before so some items have been done.

How does bending the pushrod guide plates give you proper alignment of your roller rocker arm on the valve? Torquing the rocker arm stud/lower head nut would just flatten it out again against the machined surface of the head underneath the guide plate. Proper roller tip to valve tip relationship is a function of the rocker arm platform angle being the same as the valve angle.

With most reworked Corvair heads having had the valve guides replaced, valve angles are often not consistent and can be quite far from the stock specification.

Johnathan, he did not bend them on the plane that you are thinking of.
He changed the angle of the slots.

Yes as Mel said, the slot in the center allows the tip of the roller rocker to be centered over the valve tip. Where before the tip was only about 2/3 on the valve and 1/3 inboard or outboard.

Think it as rotation of where the guide is in relation to the rocker post. By cutting the slot and moving the guide hole closer or further away.

Got it. Now I understand. This modification makes the rocker arm roller tip sit directly on top of the valve stem instead of a bit off to one side or the other. Good to know even for standard or stamped steel roller tip rockers.

There is so much knowledge in this thread it hurts my brain. Tom at the point that you had the 6 holes drilled to fix the seats, you could have just filled them with 6 injector bungs and substituted carb building and tuning with a serious injection setup. winking smiley
